What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary ER/ICU Overnight Technician position at ECOVETS VETERINARY SPECIALISTS AND ER?
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate ER/ICU Veterinary Technician to join our emergency and critical care team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal care and provide exceptional support to our veterinarians and nurses.
*** Availability to work overnight shifts and weekends is required. ***
Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Correctly and safely restrain patients
- Be familiar with common medications used in the hospital
- Perform in-house diagnostics, imaging and prepare reference lab submissions
- Assist with and perform basic and advanced CPR
- Appropriately calculate and set up dilutions and continuous rate infusions
- Give accurate and detailed rounds
- Evaluate and identify lung sounds (abnormal and normal) and evaluate and identify heart murmurs on auscultation
- Appropriately assess bladder size and express the bladder if required
- Demonstrate the comprehension and treatment of hypercapnia, hypocapnia, hypertension, hypotension, bradycardia, tachycardia
- Understand and interpret ECG parameters and common abnormalities
- Be familiar with types of crystalloids and colloids and know when they should be used
- Set up and maintain a buretrol with fluids and additives
- Understand and explain ASA Level I, II, III as it relates to an anesthetized patient and understand and apply normal vital signs for a patient under anesthesia
- Obtain urine samples via cystocentesis
- Set up for and assist with aspirates and correctly process impression smears
- Set up for thoracocentesis and assist with procedure
- Perform feedings using esophagostomy and gastrotomy tubes including maintenance and care of the tube and stoma site
- Place, use and maintain nasogastric tubes including the ability to correctly confirm placement
- Properly place nasal oxygen cannula understanding the difference between a nasal line and a nasopharyngeal lines
- Perform blood transfusions including cross matches, blood typing, set up and administration of the transfusion. Understand and recognize transfusion reactions
- Prepare patients for surgery including proper clipping, sterile prep and positioning
- Perform routine intravenous inductions and intubate anesthetized patients safely
- Demonstrate how to check correct positioning and cuff inflation
- Perform schirmer tear tests and fluorescein stains and identify and explain normal and abnormal results
- Correctly apply and care for soft padded, Robert Jones and sampling line bandages
- Assist technicians and doctors with patient care needs outside of your department
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of a veterinary certification program or equivalent experience is highly recommended
- Previous experience as an ER/ICU technician
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively
- Knowledge of small animal anesthesia and sedation techniques and monitoring
- Strong understanding of animal behavior, anatomy and physiology
- Ability to lift animal up to 30 pounds and stand for long periods
- Proficiency in aseptic technique and animal restraint
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail, being a team player, ability to collaborate with others
