Summary: This role focuses on oily wastewater separation and processing while ensuring strict compliance with all EPA CWT regulations under 40 CFR Part 437 and applicable state permits. The operator will work closely with the lab technician and environmental team to ensure all treated effluent meets or exceeds regulatory discharge limits.

Essential Duties of Position:

• Operate and monitor the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system and supporting equipment for treating oily and industrial wastewater as part of CWT operations.
• Oversee and adjust chemical feed systems, including emulsion breakers, pH control agents, coagulants, and flocculants, specifically for oil and grease separation efficiency.
• Coordinate with lab tech to collect and analyze samples according to CWT compliance protocols, including pH, COD, oil and grease, TSS, and metals testing.
• Maintain thorough and accurate records of influent and effluent sampling, flow rates, chemical usage, and compliance data per CWT permit requirements.
• Monitor and log daily and cumulative load tracking for different waste streams, as required by waste profiling and generator manifests.
• Perform waste receiving inspections and verify that profiles match treatment capabilities and permits.
• Collaborate in maintaining and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and site-specific CWT Best Management Practices (BMPs).
• Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly equipment inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal pump, tank, filter, sensor, and piping performance.
• Assist in training and oversight of load documentation, manifesting, and waste compatibility checks.
• Respond quickly to system upsets or alarms, particularly those impacting oil separation, chemical feed, or permitted effluent parameters.
• Support internal audits, third-party inspections, and regulatory agency visits, including those of the EPA, state environmental departments, and local authorities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Needed:

• Strong knowledge of oily wastewater separation techniques (DAF systems preferred)
• Basic understanding of chemical handling, dosing systems, and treatment system hydraulics
• Mechanical aptitude for operating, inspecting, and maintaining pumps, valves, float systems, and dosing equipment
• Proficient in reading and interpreting SDS, waste profiles, manifests, and environmental permits

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED (required)
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in industrial wastewater treatment or environmental operations (required)
• Three (3) to five (5) years of experience (preferred)

Preferred:

• Familiarity with CWT facility operations and applicable EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 437)
• State-issued wastewater operator certification (Class I or higher) - *Must have the ability to obtain within 2 years of employment*
• Previous experience working in a CWT or TSDF (Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility)
• Knowledge of hazardous waste compatibility, manifesting, and EPA generator classifications
• Familiarity with SCADA systems, HMI controls, or automated treatment monitoring tools
• OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification (or ability to obtain)
