What are the responsibilities and job description for the System Engineer position at Eastern Mennonite University?

Job Summary:

The Systems Engineer operates and maintains Windows and Linux servers and the services provided by these systems. The Systems Engineer must have the ability to understand complex systems, have advanced problem determination and problem-solving skills. They will work with team members in the development of systems and network security, strategies and implementing software and hardware upgrades.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operation of servers, KVMs, storage, appliances and virtual servers.
  • Server and system patch management.
  • Implementation of campus network computer systems.
  • Disaster recovery planning.
  • Managing and monitoring systems.
  • Automating tasks.
  • Designing systems.
  • Providing technical guidance and troubleshooting.
  • Monitoring backup and recovery.
  • Enforcing security protocols.
  • Creating and maintaining system documentation.
  • Conducting regular system audits to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Product knowledge of Server OS: Windows, Linux; Directory: Active Directory, MS Entra, Google; Languages: UNIX shells, Python, Windows Powershell; Enterprise Storage/Backup: CommVault, AWS S3; Cloud: AWS, Google, Microsoft; Certs: (SSL) Entrust, (SSO) Microsoft Entra; Virtualization: VMWare, Microsoft, AWS AppStream; Domain: Windows; Printing: Papercut; Telecom: Frafos, Uniteme; Access Control: Genetec; Emergency Communications: Rave, Alertus.
  • Experience managing a Windows domain.
  • Strong knowledge of network protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and routing protocols.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python.
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery tools.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. 
  • Project management.
  • Strong knowledge of authentication, MS MFA and MS SSO.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze information for effective decision making.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to deal effectively with a variety of situations and constituents.
  • Ability to take initiative, set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines, ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, critically, and creatively.
  • Ability to use a PC and software such as, Microsoft Office and Google.
  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as a copy machine, fax, phone, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Ability to build relationships that balance the multiple, varying, and sometimes conflicting interest of diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards of customer service.
  • Ability to occasionally work hours outside of the normal work schedule, such as evenings and weekends.

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field, and a minimum of 4 years of experience in technical computer-related positions, demonstrating the ability to learn information systems at a technical level that would allow administering an enterprise network (1,500 devices and 3,000 users) and experience testing and implementing network software, and able to demonstrate the ability to master a complex environment that includes a variety of kinds of systems, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Experience in a higher education environment is preferred. 


Physical Requirements: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee must have manual dexterity for working with computer components. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds when carrying equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
