Job Overview
Supervise union shop employees in the Mounting and Mechanics department, directing the daily assembly of trailer bodies onto their frames and the installation of mechanical and electrical components to produce finished units that meet East Trailers’ quality, safety, and delivery standards.

Balance quality, productivity, cost, safety, and morale across a team of 20–30 employees, ensuring every unit is mounted, fitted, tested, and ready for final inspection on time and built right the first time.

Responsibilities

1. Production planning and workflow management

Accountable for planning and assigning daily work to keep the mounting and mechanics line running efficiently and on schedule:

  • Preparing work schedules, assigning tasks, and overseeing work product while minimizing overtime.
  • Working with Materials to confirm inventory — bearings, slats, hardware, lights, harnesses, and tailgates — is staged before production begins.
  • Monitoring line flow, resolving bottlenecks, and communicating daily status to the Plant Manager.

2. Quality assurance and standard work

Accountable for ensuring all mounting and mechanical assembly work meets East Trailers’ specifications and quality standards:

  • Ensuring trailers are mounted correctly and all components — drive units, tailgates, lights, harnesses, mud flaps, and reflective tape — are installed to print.
  • Verifying pre-inspection testing of hoist mechanisms, tailgates, and lights is completed on every unit before it moves to final inspection.
  • Monitoring standard work adherence and collaborating with Quality to resolve non-conformances and drive root cause.

3. Safety, housekeeping, and HAZCOM compliance

Accountable for maintaining a safe, clean, and fully compliant work environment across the department:

  • Enforcing all safety policies, OSHA requirements, and HAZCOM standards and ensuring all required PPE is worn consistently.
  • Conducting regular floor audits, addressing unsafe conditions immediately, and ensuring equipment defects are reported to maintenance without delay.
  • Leading safety talks and ensuring all employees participate in required HAZCOM and safety training.

4. Team leadership, development, and employee relations

Accountable for building and maintaining an accountable, skilled, and productive team:

  • Coaching, counseling, and managing performance of union shop employees including employee relations matters.
  • Facilitating training on mounting procedures, mechanical assembly, tool operation, and safety requirements.
  • Providing corrective action and issuing discipline in alignment with company policy and the collective bargaining agreement.

5. Timekeeping, reporting, and continuous improvement

Accountable for accurate administrative oversight and identifying opportunities to improve department performance:

  • Managing employee timekeeping, auditing payroll records, and tracking production metrics including output, scrap, and rework.
  • Recommending improvements in mounting methods, equipment, and operating procedures.
  • Coordinating with Engineering, Quality, and Materials to resolve recurring issues and improve line efficiency.

Experience

  • Hands-on knowledge of trailer mounting and mechanical assembly including frame mounting, bearing installation, drive unit connection, and electrical harness and light installation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to verify assemblies meet specification.
  • Proficiency operating and training others on drills, impact wrenches, welders, cranes, slings, and hand tools used in the department.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, HAZCOM standards, and manufacturing safety practices for a heavy fabrication environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills to manage people, priorities, and production flow on the floor.
  • High school diploma, trade school diploma, or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience in trailer manufacturing, mechanical assembly, or heavy fabrication.
  • Previous supervisory or lead experience required.
  • Demonstrated hands-on knowledge of trailer mounting, mechanical assembly, and electrical installation.
  • OSHA certification preferred; management training program a plus.

Pay: $27.00 - $32.52 per hour
