General Summary
Under the leadership of the building Principal and in alignment with the policies and mission of East Lansing Public Schools, the Associate Principal plays a key role in shaping a dynamic, student-centered school community. This leader works collaboratively and proactively with students, staff, and families to foster an engaging, supportive, and inclusive environment where all students can thrive.
About the Role
- Conducts regular classroom observations and delivers actionable, growth-oriented feedback to teachers; facilitates professional learning communities and supports new staff through comprehensive onboarding and ongoing development planning.
- Collaborates as an integral member of a strong, forward-thinking administrative team.
- Assumes leadership responsibilities in the Principal’s absence, ensuring smooth and consistent operations.
- Upholds high expectations for student conduct through fair, consistent, and developmentally appropriate practices; uses data to identify trends and implement proactive, policy-aligned interventions.
- Oversees daily building operations, including student supervision, safety procedures, and coordination of emergency drills; provides supervision for afternoon and evening school events as assigned.
- Develops and implements comprehensive student support systems, including MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and crisis response protocols.
- Builds strong and authentic partnerships with families through regular communication and collaborative problem-solving; serves as a key point of contact for parent concerns.
- Participates in IEP and 504 meetings to support appropriate programming for students with diverse needs.
- Coordinates state, district, and local assessments.
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
- Must hold valid Michigan School Administrator Certificate or working toward Administrative Certification
- Ability to work cooperatively with school staff, community, students, and other employees of the school district
- Leadership skills in planning, instruction, decision-making, and conflict resolution
- Teaching experience at the secondary level preferred
- Skill in the collection, interpretation, and presentation of data to drive improvement efforts
- Ability to work with a diverse school community in ways that are culturally appropriate and sensitive
- Dedication to innovation, openness, and continuous personal and organizational improvement
- Supervisory or administrative experience preferred, but not required
