SUMMARY:

The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Superintendent, oversees all matters as defined by the Superintendent, and is their representative in lieu of the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent handles a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent leads strategic initiatives and special projects as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure the viable operation of East Grand School District and maintains constant and timely communication with the Superintendent regarding the day-to-day operation of EGSD. The Assistant Superintendent ensures that the Superintendent’s directives are implemented and represent EGSD.

The Assistant Superintendent provides coordination and oversight in the implementation of the Strategic Plan and initiatives to support the attainment of the goals and objectives of the plan and performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent provides visionary leadership to manage and influence future growth opportunities to achieve long term performance goals & objectives. The Assistant Superintendent develops a culture of collaboration between the Board of Education and District leaders that results in a shared vision for District success, as well as, creates avenues to gain relevant and timely feedback from our community.

The Assistant Superintendent manages actions and decisions impacting the Board of Education and the Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent advises and counsels district leadership (Board of Education, Superintendent, and Principals) to safeguard the District in providing clear, complete and accurate communication to external and internal audiences.

The Assistant Superintendent also serves as the Chief Communications & Public Relations Officer to plan, develop, and implement strategic communication.

The Assistant Superintendent will be the leader of safety practices, protocols, and procedures. The Assistant Superintendent will coordinate internal changes to better protect our staff and students. The Assistant Superintendent will work with all external agencies for collaborative efforts to protect our communities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Providing chief support for the Superintendent.
  • Serving as a supportive liaison between the Superintendent, Board of Education, and administrative staff.
  • Serving as Acting Superintendent at the direction of the Superintendent.
  • Directly handling matters of school district importance as delegated; including preparing District level reports and managing special projects.
  • Ensuring that expectations and deadlines are clearly communicated to administrators and that issues requiring the Superintendent’s attention are handled efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Channeling incoming correspondence directed to the Superintendent’s office to appropriate personnel for action or information; conserving the Superintendent’s time by reading, researching, and responding to correspondence and requests.
  • Advising school district personnel on communication strategies and assists with the development and release of internal and external information.
  • Serving as the primary Communication/Public Information Officer during emergency and disaster situations by providing prompt and accurate information to staff, the public, and district personnel.
  • Working cooperatively with all parties to advance the educational mission of the District.
  • Managing ongoing projects initiated by the Superintendent connected to the Strategic Plan and generating ongoing management reports.
  • Providing reports to the Board of Education at all board meetings.
  • Providing integrated policy analysis and strategic consultation to the Board of Education, Superintendent, and senior administration on major issues affecting the District.
  • Interacting with industry, government, legislative interests group and community officials in the representation and development of the District’s strategic initiatives.
  • Building coalitions and working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at all levels within EGSD and with students, families, communities, advocacy groups, and partners to effectively represent the Superintendent and EGSD.
  • Representing the District and Superintendent publicly at meetings, in staff meetings, conferences, community events and more including local, state and national events.
  • Participating with the Superintendent and other staff in strategic planning, policy development and problem resolution of complex issues and needs.
  • Leading coordination and integration of high priority activities of other administrators in the development and implementation of established core initiatives for the Superintendent and the District, including:
    • Alignment and improvement of internal policy development systems and structures; and
    • Planning and facilitation of weekly meetings of the District Administrative Team.
  • Maintaining constant communication and contact with the Superintendent concerning the overall operation of the district.
  • Acting as an advocate for district schools and ensuring that quality support and services are provided.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in education plus additional coursework/experience required for certification or licensure*
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in district level administration role preferred;
  • Proven experience working within a large organization to achieve a change vision or implementing change initiatives;
  • Attend and complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by the Superintendent.

* ( Acceptable equivalent of education and/or experience is at the sole discretion of the District )

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Must possess all required qualifications to conduct evaluations
  • Valid Colorado Principal and/or Administrator’s License;
  • Criminal background check required for hire.

Community Awareness – Assistant Superintendent possesses a basic knowledge of local cultural and educational diversity as it relates to understanding student learning, alternative and innovative teaching, and how services are provided. This position guides the development of collaborative community involvement that includes school stakeholders..

Legal Knowledge Base – Assistant Superintendent must also possess a working knowledge of and promote and enact federal, state, and District education policies, standards, and procedures. This position is responsible for supporting District personnel in understanding and abiding by legal and ethical boundaries as outlined in the:

  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015);
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004),
  • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act (1964),
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act,
  • District and school student achievement data and Colorado State Standards

Cultural Awareness – This employee must also possess a basic knowledge of local cultural diversity and other knowledge expectations include but are not limited to:

  • Exceptional English oral and written communication skills including consultive abilities; preference for bi-lingual Spanish;
  • Well-developed understanding of differentiated instruction program development as well as a variety of methodologies/strategies used for instruction;
  • Well-developed knowledge base for Performance Based Learning, Social and Emotional learning, Professional Learning Systems, and large-scale system design;
  • Well-developed ability to apply best practices in PL curriculum and in working with adult learners;
  • Well-developed knowledge and research skills/experience and leading innovating initiatives;
  • Well-developed writing, organizational, scheduling, report writing and record keeping skills;
  • Well –developed ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, building and department procedures;
  • Ability to lead, communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job; especially as related to personnel and student issues;
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible with collaborative critical thinking and problem solving capabilities;
  • Ability to use de-escalation skills to diffuse and manage stressful and fluid situations;
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

AVAILABILITY : The Assistant Superintendent position holds an expectation for work outside of the regular schedule to include evening board meetings and some weekends appearing at and attending a variety of activities including sports events, awards ceremonies, community meetings and workshops, and other student based activities. Assistant Superintendent strives to balance the level of attendance at such events in conjunction with all other duties, obligations, and personal life.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING : Work is self-directed, assigned by the Superintendent and guided by East Grand School District , federal, and state policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and laws. Employee uses considerable independent thinking, judgment, and complex analytical skills. Requires observational, prioritization, strong listening skills, tact, and attention to detail to determine the urgency of situations and to accurately assess those situations in a timely manner. Employee must have a strong understanding of student behavior, district culture, and be able to quickly analyze the impact of decisions on students, staff, school district, and the community.

Accountable for the final decisions and outcomes of complex departments and multiple functions. The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the leadership of others in supervisory roles and decisions impact the management of others. Work is complicated by the diversity and severity of student and staff needs, issues and situations combined with budget management responsibilities and multiple program demands. Contact occurs across all organizational areas and involves input to decision making regarding policies, practices and procedures that have a broad organizational and community impact.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Physical requirements are those typical of an administrative or school environment including but not limited to:

  • Comfortably navigating distance and environment:
  • Navigate within classroom(s), hallways, offices, and bathrooms in assigned buildings
  • Assisting in the navigation and movement of others including students, and school staff/volunteers in the execution of fire drills, shelter in place drills, lock-down, evacuation, and all other safety drills
  • Navigating environment is primarily administrative and school building interiors with occasional travel outside
  • Essential sensory and communicative activities include:
  • Continuously using hearing and speaking to exchange information in person, via telephone, and/or radio,
  • Continuously using, focus, color, depth, peripheral, long and near vision to monitor, assess, and determine,
  • Possessing dexterity of hands to use equipment and materials necessary to perform job functions.
  • Physical agility and strength include but are not limited to:
  • Frequently lift, carry, or push weight up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Note : All lifts of 50# or more require a two-person lift technique;
  • Frequently bend, stoop or squat to pick up items from the floor, shelves, counters, cupboards etc.;
Frequently extend arms and hands to reach above head, into cabinets/drawers, and across desk surfaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but can be loud depending on activity levels and time of day.
