Job Summary

The Assistant Teacher will provide support to the Lead Teacher in implementing age-appropriate educational activities and ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the classroom. This role is essential in creating a positive, nurturing, and inclusive environment for children, adhering to Michigan’s Childcare Licensing and regulations, and promoting developmentally appropriate practices.

Responsibilities

Support Classroom Instruction:

  • Assist in planning and delivering educational activities that align with Michigan’s licensing standards and the developmental needs of children.
  • Support the Lead Teacher in implementing daily routines, including structured activities, nap times, snack times, and outdoor play.
  • Aid in maintaining an organized and clean classroom environment that promotes exploration and learning.

Ensure Safety and Well-Being:

  • Follow Michigan's childcare licensing regulations to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children at all times.
  • Supervise children during activities to ensure safety and well-being, especially during outdoor play, field trips, and other special activities.
  • Be proactive in identifying potential safety hazards and taking corrective actions as necessary.

Support Positive Behavior and Social-Emotional Development:

  • Assist in implementing behavioral management techniques that promote positive social interactions, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution in accordance with Michigan licensing guidelines.
  • Encourage respectful and cooperative behavior through modeling and gentle guidance.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of children’s progress, attendance, and daily activities.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher to document incidents, observations, and any concerns regarding child development or behavior as required by state regulations.
  • Follow all reporting requirements as outlined in Michigan’s childcare licensing policies.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding children’s progress, behavior, and any concerns.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members to maintain a cohesive and supportive team environment.

Ongoing Professional Development:

  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to stay current on Michigan’s childcare licensing regulations and best practices in early childhood education.
  • Adhere to required continuing education hours as outlined by Michigan’s licensing standards.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Center Director to support the day-to-day operations of the childcare center.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a Child Development Associate (CDA) or relevant college coursework in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with children in a childcare or early childhood education setting is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with children, parents, and team members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a compassionate attitude toward children.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take initiative.
  • Basic knowledge of child development and age-appropriate practices.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
