Underground Utilities Superintendent

Position Summary

The Underground Utilities Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of underground utility construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget. This role leads field personnel, coordinates subcontractors and equipment, and works closely with Project Managers to deliver high-quality water, sewer, storm drainage, and site utility projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage all field operations for underground utility construction projects from start to completion.
• Supervise and coordinate field crews, foremen, subcontractors, and equipment resources.
• Plan daily and weekly work activities to maximize productivity and meet project schedules.
• Ensure installation of water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, force mains, and related utility infrastructure meets project specifications and quality standards.
• Review construction plans, specifications, and schedules to effectively manage field operations.
• Coordinate inspections, utility companies, municipalities, engineers, and project stakeholders.
• Monitor project progress and communicate schedule, manpower, equipment, and material needs to the Project Manager.
• Identify and resolve field challenges while minimizing impacts to safety, schedule, and budget.
• Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations while promoting a strong safety culture.
• Maintain accurate daily reports, production tracking, equipment logs, and project documentation.
• Mentor and develop foremen and field personnel while fostering teamwork and accountability.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, or Foreman overseeing underground utility projects.
• Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods, excavation, trench safety, grading, and site development.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility plans.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Strong understanding of scheduling, production management, and resource planning.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with HCSS, Procore, Bluebeam, or other construction management software is a plus.
• Valid driver's license with the ability to travel between project sites.

Preferred Skills

• Experience managing multiple crews and complex utility projects simultaneously.
• Knowledge of NJDOT, municipal, and utility authority standards and specifications.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in fast-paced field environments.
• Commitment to quality workmanship, safety, and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Frequent walking on active construction sites and uneven terrain.
• Ability to stand, climb, kneel, and inspect work throughout the workday.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
