PLEASE NOTE: This is a short-term/temporary position that has an immediate start date and an anticipated end date of January 22nd, 2027.  Estimated Monthly Salary Range of $6,250.00 to $7,083.33

The Counselor: Guidance position is a vital member of the EMNRBS educational team.  Dedicated to supporting students' in the specific fields of Academics, Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) and College & Career Exploration; Counselors provide individual and group counseling, closely collaborates with instructional staff, students’ families & community resource partners, and implements programs designed to enhance EMNRBS’ students well-being & success. 

 

Reporting directly to EMNRBS’ Executive Director, the Counselor: Guidance position is multifaceted; requiring a balance of academic advising, emotional support, and strong communication with all parties involved in a student's education. This position plays a pivotal role in helping students transition successfully to the next phase of their lives.  In addition, Counselors will be responsible for the enacting, executing and documenting all pertinent best practices and compliance items specific to this position.  

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Academic Accountability:
    • Monitoring Academic Progress: Ensures students are taking the correct courses in the proper sequence for graduation and post-graduation plans (including college applications), quick identification of any areas where students may need additional support, such as creating formal written academic goals with students, assisting with the development of studying habits & time management skills, and referring students to study groups and/or tutoring.
    • Collaborating with teachers to track student performance and communicate about any academic challenges.
  • Socio-Emotional Learning Development:
    • Wellness Initiatives: Develop programs to promote mental health awareness, resilience, and emotional regulation among students.
    • Conflict & Situation Resolution: Mediate conflicts & situations  between students, staff, or families, fostering a positive and inclusive school environment centered on learning to be accountable for one’s actions.
    • Life Skills: Helping students learn and practice skills such as self-advocacy, resilience, and decision-making.
    • Counseling Sessions:  Both formal and informal for students to discuss personal, emotional, or social challenges they may be facing.  This consists of both State Mandated Counseling (IEPs) and Volunteering counseling. 
  • Student Advocacy:
    • Individualized Support Plans: Advocate for students with diverse needs, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, and English Language Learners.
    • Diversity and Inclusion: Address issues of equity and ensure all students feel valued, respected, and supported.
    • Crisis Response: Act as a first responder in situations involving student safety, including self-harm, abuse, or neglect.
  • Collaboration and Outreach:  
    • Parent and Guardian Engagement: Regularly meeting with parents to discuss their child's academic progress, emotional well-being, post-graduation plans and available community resources specific to their needs.  This will be done by such activities as organizing parent-teacher conferences or workshops to discuss topics like college readiness, mental health, and academic success.
    • Faculty Collaboration: Collaborate and regularly meet with teachers, administrators, and school staff to create a supportive learning environment.
    • Community Resources: Connect students and families with external resources, including mental health professionals, social services, and community programs.

 

Other Duties of Note

School Culture:  As a member of EMNRBS, this position is expected to play a key role in the development & reinforcement of a positive school culture among EMNRBS’ Staff, Students & Parents, and surrounding community.  As such, proactive collaboration, communication & engagement with Staff, Students & Parents, and the surrounding community is also a required part of this position’s duties.  The highest levels of professionalism, particularly business attire & consistent verbal/nonverbal communication is expected at all times whether in official or unofficial capacities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the content area or related field (Required)
  • Master’s Degree (Required)
  • New York State Certification School Counseling or Mental Health Counseling (Required)
  • Bilingual (Strongly Preferred)
