SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

The School-Based Clinician is responsible for providing immediate and ongoing (time-limited) clinical mental health services to students in need Primary function is to assess,triage, and provide evidenced based interventions for individuals who are seen as at risk by administration, or school staff and deemed to be in need of mental health services. The role of the school based clinician will be to ensure continuity of care: an immediate and professional evaluation, collaboration with proper agencies, referral to appropriate type and level of service, attendance at school meetings if deemed appropriate and advocacy for any treatment deemed necessary beyond initial crisis. The school based clinician will also conduct follow up individual or group sessions  with each child assessed and if on-going therapy is required, the clinician is able to provide that on school grounds at no charge to the student.

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS:

  • Has set school hours where presence is used for crisis assessments, individual or group therapy sessions, classroom interventions, or meetings 
  • Assesses the nature of any crisis and initiates appropriate response, intervention and level of service 
  • Where appropriate/necessary clinician will provide immediate crisis intervention services including suicide risk assessment, mental status exam and assessment of any other psychological and physical needs 
  • Collaborates with school, family or other appropriate persons, relevant to the situation at hand 
  • Staff cases, when necessary, with the SBTP Supervisor
  • Obtains proper paperwork and maintains strict adhesion to confidentiality 
  • Determines type and level of care for the individual assessed and documents accordingly 
  • Contacts other agencies (EMS, child protective services, law enforcement, etc.) when necessary 
  • Makes initial contact with any referring agency or private practitioner
  • Provides individual who was assessed (and/or their family) with necessary written information for follow up and education, also for any consent that may be done with the agency or therapist receiving the individual for treatment.
  • Conduct follow-up sessions with students to monitor progress and ensure ongoing support.
  • Initiates  individual and/or group therapy when appropriate and maintains a schedule to follow-up with  students on campus 
  • Maintains communication with school counselors on risk level or plan for treatment 
  • Maintains communication with other school personnel as needed on collaborative care for student 
  • Will be part of the ECSD and School specific crisis response team 
  • Attends all staff meetings and participates in weekly supervision with SBT team
  • Document all clinical records in the AHC medical records system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with agency and school policies and within the required timelines. 
  • Stay informed and adhere to all policies and procedures of both AHC and the assigned school(s) to ensure seamless integration of services.

Knowledge & Skills to:

  • Proficiency in DSM 5-TR diagnoses, symptoms, and treatment modalities.
  • Familiarity with local and agency resources for mental health referrals and wraparound services. 
  • Expertise in assessing suicidality, self-harm risks, and crisis intervention strategies. 
  • Ability to build rapport and work effectively with diverse populations, including students from various cultural, socioeconomic, and neurodiverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in basic computer operations, including Microsoft Word, electronic health records (EHR), and data management systems for documentation and reporting. 

Ability to:

  • Establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without direct supervision 
  • Maintain boundaries with clients, practitioners and other agencies 
  • Maintain composure, professionalism, and structure in any given situation 
  • Uphold confidentiality at all times and adhere to the minimum necessary rule whenever data is shared 
  • Maintain communication with clinical and school based staff on a regular basis 
  • Handle and resolve recurring problems in a timely and effective manner. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work or related field 
  • Colorado state license preferred (or at minimum, desire to receive supervision so that license can be obtained within one year of hire date) 
  • Two years' experience working in school-based settings, outpatient clinics, or community mental health with training in crisis and trauma experience preferred. 
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus
