Director of Recruitment & Staff Engagement

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School
Washington, DC Full Time
POSTED ON 5/11/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/7/2026
You Are

A strategic, results-driven talent leader committed to ensuring every student experiences an exceptional education by building and sustaining a high-performing, mission-aligned staff. You bring a strong track record of designing and executing recruitment and engagement strategies that lead to measurable outcomes—strong pipelines, high-quality hires, and improved staff retention. You understand that talent is the most critical lever for organizational success, and you approach recruitment not as a transactional process, but as a disciplined, proactive system that requires clarity, rigor, and continuous improvement.

You value coherence and consistency, and have experience building and managing systems that translate organizational priorities into effective hiring practices and meaningful staff experiences. You are both a strategist and an operator—able to set vision while ensuring strong execution through clear processes, aligned stakeholders, and attention to detail. You know how to position an organization as an employer of choice, leveraging storytelling, partnerships, and targeted outreach to attract diverse, high-impact candidates, while managing others to bring that vision to life.

You are a strong partner and influencer, able to build trust with leaders, guide hiring managers toward high-quality decisions, and hold a consistent bar for excellence across all roles. You lead with data and outcomes, using insights to refine strategies, strengthen pipelines, and improve systems over time. Grounded in a deep commitment to equity, you actively work to expand access, mitigate bias, and ensure inclusive practices are embedded throughout recruitment and engagement efforts. Above all, you bring urgency, ownership, and purpose to your work—driven to ensure that every hire and every staff experience strengthens the collective ability of E.L. Haynes to deliver extraordinary outcomes for all students.

You Will

Lead E.L. Haynes’ strategy for attracting, selecting, and engaging exceptional talent to drive strong, equitable student outcomes across all campuses. Reporting to the Chief Talent Officer, you will partner closely with school leaders and hiring managers to align recruitment and staff experience with organizational priorities and the vision of Haynes 3.0.

You will build and manage proactive talent pipelines, elevate the Haynes employer brand through targeted marketing and storytelling, and oversee rigorous, high-quality hiring processes that consistently yield mission-aligned staff. Through oversight of recruitment systems, external partnerships, a marketing contractor, and Teacher Recruitment Ambassadors, you will expand and strengthen candidate pools while ensuring a strong, consistent candidate experience.

In parallel, you will design and lead a cohesive staff engagement strategy that strengthens onboarding, connection, and retention across the organization. By bringing clarity, urgency, and disciplined execution to this work, you will ensure that every hire and every staff experience strengthens Haynes’ ability to deliver extraordinary outcomes for all students.

Recruit: Build and Lead a Best-in-Class Talent Acquisition Strategy

You will design and execute a proactive, data-driven recruitment strategy that ensures Haynes attracts top-tier, mission-aligned talent.

  • Lead the development and execution of the annual recruitment strategy, aligned to organizational priorities and workforce planning;
  • Build and manage robust candidate pipelines across instructional and non-instructional roles, with a strong emphasis on proactive sourcing;
  • Oversee candidate cultivation strategies, ensuring high-touch engagement from first interaction through offer;
  • Manage and deepen partnerships with external pipelines (e.g., teacher residencies, universities, alternative certification programs);
  • Design and execute signature recruitment initiatives (events, referral programs, targeted campaigns);
  • Represent Haynes externally to elevate brand visibility and attract diverse, high-quality candidates; and
  • Use data to continuously refine sourcing strategies, track pipeline health, and improve conversion rates.

Market: Elevate the Haynes Talent Brand

You will lead the strategy for how Haynes tells its story to prospective candidates—ensuring alignment to our academic vision, STEAM identity, and culture.

  • Manage and direct a recruitment marketing contractor to execute campaigns aligned to hiring priorities;
  • Oversee a team of seasonal Teacher Recruitment Ambassadors to expand outreach and peer-driven candidate engagement;
  • Develop and implement a multi-channel recruitment marketing strategy (social media, digital campaigns, events, storytelling);
  • Ensure all recruitment messaging reflects Haynes’ identity: rigor, belonging, innovation, and inclusion;
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to capture and amplify authentic staff and student stories; and
  • Continuously assess and refine messaging based on candidate engagement and hiring outcomes.

Select: Ensure a Rigorous, High-Quality Hiring Process

You will ensure that every hire reflects the bar for excellence required to deliver strong student outcomes.

  • Oversee the end-to-end selection process, ensuring consistency, rigor, and alignment across roles;
  • Partner with hiring managers to design and implement effective selection processes, including performance tasks and interviews;
  • Lead hiring manager calibration and kickoff processes to ensure clarity on role expectations and candidate profiles;
  • Ensure an exceptional, responsive, and professional candidate experience;
  • Monitor and improve systems for application tracking, communication, and decision-making; and
  • Analyze hiring outcomes to improve selection tools, processes, and alignment to competencies.

Engage: Design and Lead a High-Impact Staff Experience Strategy

You will build systems that strengthen connection, belonging, and retention across the employee lifecycle.

  • Design and lead a comprehensive staff engagement strategy, aligned to Haynes’ core values and priorities;
  • Oversee new staff onboarding and transition experience, ensuring a strong, connected, and values-aligned start;
  • Build and implement ongoing engagement and staff recognition initiatives that meaningfully celebrate contributions, reinforce core values, and elevate both individual and team impact;
  • Develop and manage retention-focused strategies, including identifying key drivers of turnover, strengthening staff investment, and creating targeted supports for high-impact and high-potential team members;
  • Partner across teams and schools to ensure alignment between staff experience, performance, recognition, and retention goals;
  • Use data (feedback, retention trends, engagement metrics) to continuously improve staff experience systems and inform proactive retention efforts; and
  • Lead and scale initiatives that support both new staff integration and sustained, organization-wide engagement.
