SUMMARY: Prepare all students for success in high school and act as an advocate for all students in order to create a sense of direction and purpose for all students to realize their full potential.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

District Goals and Initiatives:

  • Pursue professional growth by attending professional development opportunities and stay current with guidance and counseling practices.
  • Participate in activities and assigned duties that contribute to the effective operation of the school and district.
  • Uses data to plan, implement and evaluate the counseling program.
  • Assists with various testing programs and services (Advanced Placement, PSAT, AIMS, Terra Nova, etc.).
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.

Academic Development

  • Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans and post-secondary opportunities.
  • Orchestrate the course selection process and assist students through the completion of course selection.
  • Provide student course selection information relevant to master schedule development.
  • Assist school staff in the placement of students with special needs.
  • Work collaboratively with data and records personnel.
  • Verify student records to ensure credits, classes and assessments necessary to meet graduation requirements.
  • Inform students of testing and eligibility requirements for graduation and post-secondary opportunities.
  • Facilitate activities and processes to ensure a successful 8th grade transition to high school.
  • Participate in TAT's, IEP Processes, Chronic Illness/Homebound/Home Instruction and other processes that will affect a student's Academic Development.
  • Facilitate 504's processes and meetings.

Personal And Social Development

  • Identify and assess the contributory factors inhibiting student success and take appropriate steps to effectively address same.
  • Provide responsive services to students and parents as needed and refer to appropriate district and community agencies to address related needs.
  • Communicate with and educate students, parents and families as to school and community resources.
  • Act as an advocate for all students and create and an awareness of opportunities for educational/post-secondary growth.
  • Participate in crisis intervention.
  • Support student awareness of multicultural/diverse populations.
  • Encourage participation in and create awareness of extra-curricular programs and organizations.

College And Career Development

  • Support students in the development of post-secondary planning and application processes.
  • Assist students in the identification of potential career interests and career planning.
  • Facilitate career awareness and the connections between the world of work, schooling and personal growth.
  • Support students in developing strategies for achieving college and career goals.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

Education/Certification

  • Master's degree in Counseling.
  • Arizona certificate as a School Guidance Counselor.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).

Experience

  • Experience working with any level of K-12 students and their families.
  • Teaching experience preferred.

Knowledge Of

  • High school curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Writing general correspondence and speak effectively with others.
  • Reading and interpreting general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Principles and practices of program administration.
  • Basic principles and applications of critical thinking and analysis.
  • Best practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Principles and techniques of effective oral presentations.
  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.
  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.

Skill In

  • Applying reason to research and solving moderately complex issues with little or no assistance.
  • Interpreting an assortment of instructions furnished in variable forms.
  • Performing basic original research to assist with developing teaching plans and instructional materials.
  • Maintaining and updating documentation.
  • Organizing and maintaining records, files and program information.
  • Gathering data, analyzing findings and applying logic and reason.
  • Authoring and preparing original reports, documents and presentations.
  • Researching industry trends, solutions and best practices.
  • Maintaining confidentiality.
  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Ada And Other Requirements

Positions in this class require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions: Work is routinely performed in an indoor office environment.
