Role Description The Prepress Technician role is a full-time, on-site position based in Richmond, CA. This role is responsible for preparing customer-supplied files for print, including preflighting artwork, correcting file issues, and ensuring layouts meet printing specifications. Daily tasks include setting up and imposing print-ready files, managing color profiles, calibrating equipment, and verifying resolution, bleed, and margins for both large and small format jobs. The Prepress Technician will collaborate closely with designers, account managers, and press operators to troubleshoot issues, maintain production schedules, and uphold quality standards. The role also involves organizing digital assets, following workflow procedures, and supporting continuous improvement in print production processes.
Core Responsibilities
- File Preparation: Pre-flighting customer files for bleeds, exact dimensions, and converting color profiles (typically RGB to CMYK) to prevent printing errors.
- Resolution & Scaling: Ensuring images meet minimum pixel densities so large prints appear crisp rather than pixelated.
- Imposition & Nesting: Arranging multiple graphics on a large roll or sheet to minimize material waste.
- RIP & Cut Contouring: Preparing files for routing or cutting, including setting up cut paths (e.g., for Kongsberg or Summa cutters).
- Proofing: Creating digital or hard-copy proofs for client approval.
Common Technical Skills
- Software: Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat).
- RIP Software: Experience with industry-standard software like Onyx and Fiery.
- Materials: Knowledge of various substrates (vinyl, coroplast, acrylic, banner mesh) and their specific printing profiles.
