About Dux Forensics
Dux Forensics is a Denver-based forensic engineering and construction claims firm. We investigate structural failures, construction defects, and building damage; develop repair recommendations; prepare technical analyses and expert reports; and support dispute resolution and litigation matters. Our work spans residential, commercial, and other structures, with a focus on practical investigation, sound engineering judgment, and clear communication.
Position Overview
Dux Forensics is seeking an entry-level structural engineer with a strong interest in forensic engineering, structural investigation, and construction defect analysis. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys determining how and why problems occurred, is energized by fieldwork and technical problem-solving, and wants to develop into a well-rounded forensic engineer.
Under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers, you will assist with inspections, structural analysis, repair concepts, drawings, and technical reports. You will work on matters involving structural damage, failures, construction defects, and rehabilitation of existing structures. Success in this role requires not only sound engineering judgment, but also the ability to communicate observations, analysis, and conclusions clearly and professionally in writing.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with site inspections of residential and commercial structures
- Document structural conditions through photographs, measurements, sketches, and field notes
- Evaluate structural systems, including wood framing, steel, masonry, and concrete
- Assist with root-cause analysis of structural damage, movement, distress, and construction defects
- Prepare calculations and technical analyses under the supervision of a licensed PE
- Assist with repair recommendations, structural repair drawings, and scopes of work
- Prepare clear, organized engineering reports for clients, attorneys, insurers, and other stakeholders
- Coordinate with contractors, owners, and building officials during repair and reconstruction work
- Research building code provisions, construction methods, and material performance issues
- Support projects from field investigation through analysis and final deliverables
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis, or in Structural Engineering
- 0–3 years of relevant experience
- Strong understanding of structural behavior, load paths, and basic building systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong writing ability, including the ability to prepare clear, organized, and professional reports, analyses, repair recommendations, and other client-facing technical documents
- Ability to organize observations, think critically, and communicate technical conclusions clearly
- Willingness to perform field inspections, including roofs, crawlspaces, ladders, unfinished structures, and active job sites
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally, with occasional overnight travel as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related field
- FE passed or EIT designation
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or structural drafting tools
- Familiarity with the IBC, IRC, ASCE 7, and common structural materials
- Demonstrated interest in existing buildings, failure analysis, repair design, and forensic investigation
- Exposure to residential and light-commercial construction
Professional Attributes
We are looking for someone who is:
- An innate problem solver who enjoys understanding how things work and why they fail
- A self-starter who takes ownership and follows through
- Curious and investigative, with a desire to identify root causes rather than surface symptoms
- Adaptable, and comfortable shifting between fieldwork, analysis, drafting, and writing
- Detail-oriented, while maintaining an understanding of the broader context
- Resourceful and coachable, with both initiative and humility
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a small, growing team
- A clear and disciplined writer who can organize facts, analysis, and conclusions in a logical way
- Able to communicate complex structural issues in a straightforward, concise, and professional manner
Why This Role Is Different
This is not a conventional design-only structural engineering role. You will work on real-world problems involving existing buildings, damage, defects, failures, and repair strategies. The role combines field investigation, structural engineering, construction knowledge, technical writing, and practical judgment. It is well suited for someone seeking broad exposure, meaningful responsibility, and a steep learning curve in a specialized practice area.
Benefits
- Health insurance allowance
- 401(k) with 4% matching
- Professional development and continuing education support
- Mentorship from experienced forensic and structural engineers
- Performance bonus opportunity of up to 10% of salary
- Opportunity to grow with a specialized firm and take on increasing responsibility over time
Salary : $72,000 - $85,000
