Phlebotomist/Lab Technician
Position Summary
Phlebotomist/Lab Technician is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients.
Principal Duties
· Learn Athena clinical EMR
· Learn how to operate lab machines/equipment
· Cross train in x ray if applicable
· Adhere to clinic/company policies and procedures
· Learn basic patient triage and computer input
· Assemble and set up medical instruments (needles, test tubes, blood vials, etc.)
· Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or 2 patient identifiers (ex. Name & DOB)
· Determine the correct venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
· Position and prepare the patient for blood drawing
· Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials and other equipment
· Label samples correctly and send/deliver for testing
· Educate patient on immediate after care
· Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
· Maintain a clean and sanitary space
· Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards while working
· Ensure donor confidentiality
Essential Skills/Job Requirements
- Understanding of standard blood drawing practices and procedures
- Proven experience as a phlebotomist with effective puncture techniques
- Knowledge of legal requirements about drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of relevant medical equipment and material
- Strong computer skills
- Good interpersonal skills and communication
- Attention to detail
- Ability to multitask
- Able to stand on feet, bend and move through shift
- Able to perform phlebotomy techniques on and connect with various types of patients such as: Pediatrics, Teen, Adult, Geriatric patient populations
- Strict adherence to safety regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques
Experience & Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy Technician certificate or license
Physical Requirements
Needs to be able to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasional, reach and manipulate objects with their hands (like a keyboard). Have good vision for reading computer screens and be able to hear clearly to answer phone calls; most positions may require lifting light items up to 10 pounds occasionally.
