What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach position at Durham Academy?
DA Athletics seeks a life-changing educator who will lead the varsity team and be the program head for the entire boys lacrosse program (which also includes a Middle School team consisting of student-athletes in grades 7-8). In keeping with the mission of the school — to prepare each student to live a moral, happy and productive life — this coach will keep the experience and development of student-athletes at the center of all goals. This position reports to the Director of Athletics.
Job Responsibilities:
In-Season (mid-February through mid-May)
Run tryouts and team selection
Plan and execute effective practices
Create and execute game strategy
Drive a minibus to all road games
Communicate regularly with student-athletes and their families through email about logistics and updates
Work as a team with all coaches in the boys lacrosse program and DA Athletics trainers, staff, administration and faculty
Summer and Off-Season
Coordinate and implement off-season workouts and strength training sessions for the entire boys lacrosse program
Attend professional development clinics and camps
Administrative
Work with the Athletic Director to build a competitive and balanced non-conference schedule
Collaborate with the AD to hire, evaluate and support members of the boys lacrosse coaching staff for all teams in the program
Adhere to the newly established Varsity Head Coach Job Description which outlines all expectations for our Varsity Head Coaches
Candidates should expect a regular weekday commitment at practices that typically last 90-120 minutes along with 2-3 games per week and an occasional Saturday contest.
The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:
Significant experience leading high-performing scholastic boys lacrosse teams and/or programs
A commitment to providing a safe, healthy, joyful environment for practice and play
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
An ability and eagerness to maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with all members of the school community (student-athletes, families, alumni, teachers, administrators and fellow coaches)
The ability to build relationships and keep an open dialogue with coaches about any qualified student-athletes interested in playing at the collegiate level
The ability to lead student-athletes with competitive energy and formative care
Candidates should include a cover letter with their coaching philosophy, resume and three references with their application. There is a potential to combine this position with a full-time Middle School Physical Education position beginning in August, 2026 for those qualified candidates.
