Job Summary: The Carpenter II position is a senior level carpentry position with Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This position primarily works in the Car Shop Department to perform interior and exterior wood repair/replacement on rolling stock. Work typically includes wood framing, sanding, staining, finishing and electrical/plumbing repair. Candidates should have advanced framing and finish carpentry skills and an ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Projects are centered around repair and carpentry work on historic structures, cars and other railroad artifacts/material. Our rolling stock renovations require advanced carpentry skill as well as basic electrical, HVAC and plumbing work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform structural carpentry work on all rolling stock including framing and siding work utilizing various material types including T&G sidings.
- Perform various types of finish carpentry work on all rolling stock to include the construction of doors, windows and other specialty trim projects employing various types of material.
- Install and repair plumbing on train coaches.
- Install, repair and maintain RV-type furnaces on coaches.
- Install, repair and maintain generators and basic AC and DC electrical systems on coaches.
- Employ basic railroad operating practices and rules to ensure successful interaction with operating crews and to perform regular inspections on rolling stock.
- Follow and edit drawings and blueprints for projects, as needed.
- Assist the Carman I position with railroad car inspections prior to departure and be able to perform minor repairs in a timely fashion, as required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a preemployment drug screening and physical capabilities evaluation.
Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of 5 years carpentry and construction experience or equivalent ability to demonstrate high proficiency in various woodworking and finish carpentry.
- A working knowledge of residential plumbing and electrical applications with a solid ability to troubleshoot issues and perform repairs.
- A proven command of woodworking capabilities to include cabinet, framing and finish work with prior experience, a must.
- Ability to perform and experience with general home repair and building, highly preferred (i.e. drywall, painting, form-making, etc.)
- Basic knowledge or and ability to make repairs to audio wiring, highly preferred.
- Mechanical skills and/or welding and metal working skills, a plus.
- Familiarity with working with woodworking tools (hand-held and power tools), required.
- Ability to use ladders, scaffolds, miter saws, table saws, jig saws, et. al. in a safe and efficient manner, required.
Work Environment:
- Working in and around rail yard and within an industrial shop environment
- Regularly crawl under coaches, work in confined spaces, and work atop ladders.
- Regular time spent outdoors in all types of weather
- Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl and twist.
- Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Varied work schedule with overtime work, weekend or evening shifts, as requested.
