Director, Community Engagement, Constituent Engagement, Alumni Engagement & Development

Duke University
Durham, NC Full Time
POSTED ON 4/1/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/29/2026

Occupational Summary:

The Director for Community Engagement is part of the Volunteer Engagement Strategy team within Duke Alumni Engagement and Development (AED). Duke’s alumni body comprises 205K talented individuals who share a range of relationships with Duke. These alumni are connected through this shared interest, and the resulting communities are the backbone of connection back to the university. The focus of this work will be to evolve the strategy for these communities, help drive community-specific programming, and adopt best practices from across AED and our peer institutions. Additionally, the position will coordinate work between other groups that serve distinct communities, such as the Affinity Engagement, Reunion/Class Teams, and the Regional Team.

Work Performed:

Strategic Program Development.

  • Lead the strategy for defining, structuring, and providing engagement insights for communities, including boards, select communities, WIN, and regional Women’s Forum efforts. Build a framework for these communities that is inclusive (Duke communities are open to all), consistent (for a better alumni experience), and efficient at driving engagement.
  • In partnership with the development team and groups within constituent engagement, define and structure the regional board/leadership to advance our engagement and philanthropic goals. Evolve the WIN program by promoting opportunities to join, enhancing participant engagement, and coordinating efforts with the Keohane Initiative and other programs.
  • Drive research, testing, and the sharing of best practices for such engagement with partners across AED and the University.

Volunteer management/program execution.

  • Recruit, train, and coordinate an implementation plan for specific programming important to these communities, including regional signature events, Women’s Forum (regionally), and Women’s Weekend.
  • Much of the programming within these communities is a collaborative effort, so ensure aligned planning and success metrics, transparent communications and updates, as well as clear roles regarding leadership, approvals, and financial responsibility.
  • Evolve the “board book” and other resources that allow these communities to connect and advance in their professional lives.
  • Assist with updating websites, databases, newsletters, and other communications pieces to include information about volunteers and activities.

Financial and data management.

  • In partnership with our financial team, build and manage a financial model that will keep our communities on budget and all financial transactions visible to the necessary parties. This should include financial planning for each community and careful tracking of subsidies.
  • Ensure each community is trained on Duke’s financial processes and that the groups are compliant.
  • Create and lead the community towards crisp engagement goals.
  • Gather, post, and analyze data about these audiences and their engagement.

This position will occasionally involve travel.
