We are seeking a dedicated, independent, and knowledgeable Hardscaper to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, the ability to work independently, and a passion for creating and maintaining beautiful outdoor spaces. This is an independent contractor position that requires someone who is dependable, self-motivated, and comfortable managing their own schedule while meeting high standards of quality and professionalism.
The Hardscaper will spend some days working collaboratively with team members and other days working solo in the field. Candidates should be technologically sound, able to use smartphones or tablets for job tracking, time logs, and communication. You must also have reliable transportation (a personal work vehicle) as you’ll be reimbursed for mileage on approved routes.

Responsibilities
- Site Preparation & Grading
- Excavating and leveling: Clearing the designated area and digging trenches or deep pits to accommodate the new structure's base.
Structural Installation
- Laying pavers and stonework: Cutting, measuring, and setting interlocking concrete pavers, flagstone, or brick for patios, driveways, and walkways. [1, 2, 3]
- Building retaining walls: Constructing structural walls using segmented blocks, boulders, or treated wood to hold back soil and create terraced levels. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- Building custom features: Assembling permanent outdoor elements such as fire pits, fireplaces, and built-in grills. [1, 2]
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operating heavy machinery: Driving and managing equipment like skid steers, mini-excavators, and plate compactors.
- Handling power tools: Using wet saws, jackhammers, demolition hammers, and laser levels for precise cuts and measurements.
- Equipment upkeep: Performing daily preventative maintenance, cleaning, and fueling of tools and company vehicles. [1, 2, 3]
Project Management & Communication
- Reading blueprints: Analyzing site layouts and construction drawings to ensure accurate placement and dimensions.
- Client and team collaboration: Communicating progress and adjustments with clients, project managers, or a landscaping crew.

- Soil grading and compacting: Contouring the earth and using heavy tampers to prevent future settling or structural failure.

Skills & Qualifications
- Understanding of excavation practices, grading and soil compaction.
- Ability to read and follow blueprint plans and calculate grade elevations for drainage.
- Basic technological proficiency (smartphone apps, GPS, time tracking tools).
- Proficiency in stone cutting.
- Understanding sub-surface drainage and permeable systems to manage water flow and prevent erosion.
- Understanding how to operate machinery safely.
- Skilled at masonry equipment use.
- Reliable transportation for job assignments (mileage reimbursed).
