POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Public Works Operations Manager and the direct supervision of the Fleet Manager, this position oversees all maintenance and repair operations for City vehicles and equipment. The role supervises and supports mechanics at all levels, provides hands-on assistance with services and repairs as needed, coordinates and maintains the shop schedule, and ensures high-quality, efficient completion of all work.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
- Supervises staff assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage day to day fleet operations including maintaining a shop schedule. This includes outsourced repairs, quality of work and turnaround times.
- Supervise, support, direct, and develop a team of mechanics ensuring expectations are met.
- Maintain records and work logs including parts used and time spent.
- Review, diagnose, and make repairs on all mechanical aspects of equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, all braking and suspension systems, and various drive train components. This includes but is not limited to welding and fabrication.
- Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and assist all levels of mechanics when needed.
- Train all levels of mechanics in more complex maintenance and repair items and use of tools and shop equipment.
- Provide updates to supervisor daily and when issues arise that cause delays in scheduled repairs.
- Order parts and supplies and keep inventory up to date.
- Make emergency road calls and perform field repairs when needed.
- Required on-call for snow removal and fleet rotation.
- Assist with yearly budget and fleet replacement program, as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned including employee evaluations, invoice collection and review.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education – High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Experience – 5 years of verifiable mechanic experience repairing a wide range of equipment from light to heavy duty this includes in depth diagnostics with aftertreatment systems and electric repairs. Solid waste and plow experience a plus. 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- License and Certification –
- Valid Utah Class “B” Commercial Driver License or the ability to obtain within 6-month probationary period.
- State inspection certifications
- ASE Certification’s preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of –
- Safety practices and procedures.

- Skilled with –
- Computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Ability to –
- Provide strong leadership and effective supervision of mechanics, including workload scheduling, quality control, and performance oversight.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including daily email correspondence, keeping logs, writing reports as requested
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position requires working outdoors. Tasks require a variety of physical activities. Regularly required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, stand, reach, use hands/finger to feel, handle, and grip, climb or balance and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. May be confined to small spaces to perform work. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. (Performance of duties may require working in varied weather conditions such as extreme cold or hot conditions.) Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty or greasy conditions. Frequent exposure to high levels of noise. Operate equipment and drive vehicles. Must lift and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. Required to respond to emergency 24-hour call out as needed.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on site
- Monday to Friday up to 40 hours per week. (Schedule to be determined.)
- Salary range: $28.11-$46.88
