Downtown SLO is a 501 (c) (6) nonprofit founded in 1975 whose mission is to foster an economically vibrant Downtown. Downtown SLO serves the community by working on initiatives like parking and beautification efforts, coordinating special events and the weekly Farmers’ Market, supporting economic activities, and examining downtown issues. Our office is located in the heart of downtown on Chorro Street, and our work environment is fast-paced, dynamic, and fun.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Farmers’ Market Manager oversees Downtown SLO’s Thursday Night Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market Manager manages internal and external relationships for the Thursday Night Farmers’ Market, conducts research and program evaluation, oversees partnerships with external organizations, including contract development and oversight, and manages the market’s staff and general operating systems. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, independent, motivated leader who’s passionate about mission-driven work and excited about non-profit administration and the downtown community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage relationships with vendors, including the application process, orientation/education, monitoring vendor licensure, compliance, invoicing, payment collection, onsite compliance.
- Work closely with City departments to ensure street closures, barricade deployments, and Parking Services/Public Works needs at the Market are met to ensure a safe and successful market.
- Provide oversight and accountability for the Certified Farmers’ Market section. Work in tandem with the Certified Market Manager on certification, EBT compliance, reconciliation, permit auditing, and onsite management as needed.
- Coordinate, direct, and evaluate all aspects of the event, including staff management, day-of execution, and follow-ups as needed.
- Collaborate with the marketing team on weekly highlights, special promotions, and events.
- Oversee special events and activations at the Market.
- Oversee EBT/Market Match/Food Access programs. Collaborate with the Senior Director of Events and Marketing on EBT vendors and payment processing.
- Manage all event support contracts and associated expenses in cooperation with the Operations Coordinator.
- Provide monthly Market updates to the CEO for Board of Directors Meetings
- Maintain and grow relationships with organizations, partners, and stakeholders that contribute to the overall success of the Market.

MANAGEMENT
- Supervise the Thursday night Farmers’ Market team
- Supervise part-time Farmers’ Market Coordinator
- Manage budget and expenses of $500,000 annually
- Hire and train Farmers’ Market team, including College Corps Fellows and summer interns.
- Create a weekly staffing schedule
- Coordinate and lead weekly pre-Market staff meeting
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Events, Parks & Recreation, Business, or Management
- An aptitude and desire for managing large-scale events, with an affinity for working with people and the public
- Candidate must be a team player, and be able to work independently with limited supervision
- Experience with Google Suite, Salesforce, Canva, Square, and Airtable preferred
- Previous experience in managing team members is desired
- Detailed with outstanding organization, communication, time management, and customer service skills.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work with large and diverse groups of people in high-pressure situations.
- Must be able to walk, stand, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to work Thursday evenings and some weekends.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time exempt salaried position at an annual salary of $70,304. Merit-based annual increases will be based on defined metrics determined during annual review or CA State law.
