The Heavy Equipment Mechanic's work involves a variety of makes and models of trucks and heavy road equipment. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs difficult and skilled mechanical work in the repair of heavy equipment. The employee is expected to plan their work and make decisions within established policy. The work is performed under general supervision of the Fleet & Facilities Manager and is subject to inspection while in process and upon completion. Mechanics are required to provide their own basic hand tools. Shop clothing, as well as allowances for tools and clothing are provided.

  • Repair and maintain vehicles and heavy equipment including but not limited to backhoes, loaders, tractors, trucks, pavers and road graders.
  • Completes work orders, inspection reports, and other basic forms as needed.
  • Repair, inspect, adjust and replace necessary components and related parts on a wide variety of road maintenance equipment.
  • Wire feed welding, plasma cutting, oxyacetylene cutting and fabricating.
  • Mount and dismount seasonal equipment; truck calibration, brine systems and brine maker. 
  • Serve as a backup for snowplowing as directed by supervisor.
  • Diagnose defects of trucks and specialized heavy maintenance equipment.
  • Repair and/or overhaul brake systems, engines, differentials, front and rear axles.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems; remove and install engines, transmissions, and differentials. 
  • Operates Service Truck for remote repairs and diagnostics as assigned and necessary.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within six months of hire date through Douglas County CDL training program. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Completion of a vocational training course in Diesel Mechanics and Heavy Equipment Maintenance and one year of full-time paid experience as a heavy equipment mechanic; OR three years of full-time paid experience as a heavy equipment mechanic. Work experience as a heavy equipment mechanic may be substituted for formal training on the basis of two years of full-time paid experience for one year of formal training. CDL licensure is required within six months of hire.

Knowledge Required
Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade. Thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair of highway maintenance equipment including understanding of function for troubleshooting. Thorough knowledge of the operation of gasoline and diesel engines and their repair. Working knowledge of hand tools, air-electric and hydraulic-manual power tools, and operation of shop equipment and floor hoist. Working knowledge of hydraulic systems and operations.

Skills Required
Skillful use and care of hand and machine tools used in motor repair. Locate and adjust defects in motorized equipment. Read, understand and follow written and oral instructions including equipment specifications and parts manuals.  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
 

Working Conditions
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic works in a maintenance shop environment, and is occasionally subject to environmental hazards such as fumes, loud noises, and heat and cold. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in these conditions safely.

Physical Requirements
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic works at the Highway Department Facility in Hawthorne with exposure to high noise levels and shop fumes. This position requires regular lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional heavy lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Testing Requirements

Testing may be administered to assess skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential duties of this position.  Structured interview, references and/or background investigation. Candidate must be able to pass a pre-employment physical.
