What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Officer - Lateral Transfer position at Douglas County Sheriff's Office?
Douglas County Correctional Officers are responsible for overseeing individuals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or who have been sentenced to serve time in jail.
Duties
Correctional officers typically do the following:
- Enforce rules and keep order within jails
- Supervise activities of inmates
- Inspect facilities to ensure that they meet security and safety standards
- Search inmates for contraband items
- Report on inmate conduct
- Escort and transport inmates
Inside the jail, Correctional Officers enforce rules and regulations. They maintain security by preventing disturbances, assaults, and escapes, and by inspecting facilities. They check cells and other areas for unsanitary conditions, contraband, signs of a security breach (such as tampering with window bars and doors), and other rule violations. Officers also inspect mail and visitors for prohibited items. They write reports and fill out daily logs detailing inmate behavior and anything else of note that occurred during their shift.
Correctional Officers may have to restrain inmates to escort them safely to and from cells and to see authorized visitors. Officers also escort prisoners to courtrooms, medical facilities, and other destinations.
LATERAL TRANSFER
(a) Requirements
(i) Lateral transfers must possess a current full-time county corrections officer
certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards.
(ii) Lateral transfers must have a minimum of two (2) years-experience as a
certified full-time county corrections officer within the previous three (3)
years immediately prior to their hire date.
(b) Definition of “Prior Service”
Experience for this section shall be defined as total time served in the capacity of a fulltime
county corrections officer in a County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois, regardless of employers or
time between service.
For example, a full-time county corrections officer serves for four (4) years at another
County Sheriff’s Office; leaves for a year, then gets rehired at a different Sheriff’s Office where
they work for five (5) years. Following that, the full-time county corrections officer gets hired by
Douglas County. That employee shall receive nine (9) years of credit for “prior service” for the
wage scale and will start at the “After 9” step. After one (1) year with Douglas County, that
corrections officer will move the “After 10” step, and so on through the scale. The employee shallthen proceed through the scale accordingly.
(c) Wages
Upon hire, lateral transfers who meet the requirements of Section 22.2(a) of the Agreement,
shall have their prior service counted toward their “Years of Service” as listed in Appendix D of
this Agreement for the purpose of wages only.
(d) Seniority of Lateral Transfer
Lateral transfers prior completed years of prior service under this Section shall not be
considered for seniority or other benefit provisions or privileges in this Agreement.
(e) Application
This Section shall apply to all employees who meet the above criteria for the above entry
pay, including current employees and new hires.
