About This Position:
The function of this position is to direct overall ferry operations at Plaquemine Ferry Crossing, the last remaining ferry crossing on the Mississippi River operated by a state agency, which is significantly more complex than other crossings due to the length of crossing, congestion and make-up of river traffic, operation of multiple vessels concurrently, operating vessel sizes, and increased U.S. Coast Guard vessel staffing requirements.
While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications
Six years of experience in marine operations or maritime industry operations; OR
Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard officer's credential as a Master or Chief Engineer.
NOTE:
Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) will be required at the time of appointment.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Schedules and supervises ferry personnel in a multi-vessel, multi-shift operation, directing work assignments through Ferryboat Operations Supervisors and Ferryboat Operator Seniors, and assigning work schedules for all employees.Prepares, trains, and conducts practice drills for incident scenarios (e.g., man-overboard, suspicious passengers), maintains all U.S. Coast Guard–required security plans, and serves as the company vessel security officer.
Prepares payroll, maintains unit records, evaluates leave and recommends merit increases, manages hiring and personnel actions, and compiles and submits monthly reports.
Supervises collection of toll monies through shift captains and toll collectors, transports large sums to the bank without police escort, and submits all records to headquarters’ business office.
- Schedules and attends all U.S. Coast Guard inspections, coordinates corrective actions for citations, conducts monthly equipment inspections, and orders repairs and supplies through District offices.
