CUSTODIAN
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works as a team member to provide general cleaning and custodial functions at an assigned school or other District site. Maintains assigned areas in a clean, orderly and secure manner; exercises caution and care in the performance of assigned responsibilities and performs other duties directly related to this job description.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dusts, sweeps, cleans, scrubs, waxes, polishes and mops floors in classrooms, restrooms, offices, and similar facilities; cleans and paints over graffiti.
Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums and floor scrubbing and polishing machines.
Washes and scrubs walls, lavatory fixtures, windows, painted surfaces, and drinking fountains.
Services soap dispensers, towel boxes, food dispensers, and similar facilities.
Sweeps and hoses concrete or blacktop, sidewalks, parkways, and playground areas.
Replaces incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; moves and adjusts chairs, desks, tables, furniture, and equipment.
Locks and/or unlocks doors, gates, windows, and storerooms; raises and/or lowers flags; may set or disarm alarms; opens and/or secures site regularly or for special events.
Gathers and disposes of paper, rubbish, and debris; empties and washes wastepaper baskets, garbage cans, and other refuse containers; collects paper and other material for recycle pick-up.
Use, store and properly dispose of chemicals, solvents and fluids, some of which may be considered toxic and require special handling. Read, understand and follow related material data sheets.
Assists in set up, clean up, and maintenance of facilities and rooms for meetings and special events.
Provides on-site support as required for campus events.
Reports safety, sanitary, fire, or other hazards as well as maintenance needs.
Provides Lead Custodian duties in his/her absence as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
Knowledge of fire, earthquake and evacuation procedures, locations of shutoffs.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to exercise good judgment and due caution in the performance of assigned duties.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties.
Ability to maintain schedules assuring regular cleaning of assigned areas.
Ability to follow health and safety requirements concerning proper work practices and procedures.
Knowledge of safety and sanitation precautions and procedures.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Ability to work effectively and safely around children.
Ability to:
Lift/carry 104 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the time or 1-100 times per day);
Lift/carry 60 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time or 100-500 times per day);
Lift/carry 10 pounds constantly (67-100% of the time or over 500 times per day);
Push a maximum force of 120.4 pounds on objects;
Pull a maximum force of 123.5 pounds on objects.
Participates in emergency response activities as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, bending at the waist, pushing, pulling, carrying, twisting/turning, climbing ladders, seeing to assure proper and complete cleaning, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power cleaning equipment.
Light to moderate stress level.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work environment – indoors and outdoors.
Temperature – usually normal climate, occasional adverse weather conditions.
Chemical exposure – daily; solvents, cleaning compounds, polish fumes.
Exposure to blood borne pathogens and feces – occasional.
JOB PARTICULARS
Tools/equipment/work aids – latex gloves, gloves, safety goggles, respirator and/or back support when lifting as necessary.
CONTACTS
Daily contact with students and District staff.
Occasional contact with parents, general public and outside agency personnel.
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES
Valid California driver’s license.
Annual blood borne pathogen/Hep B training.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
