The purpose of the class is to perform skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and minor building construction and renovation work; to assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic systems and equipment; and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Duties
- Supervises crew. Supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending and approving employee discipline; and recommending discharge as appropriate.
- Performs work or assigns and supervises work in terms of: building and equipment maintenance and repair; landscape maintenance.
- Performs general carpentry work for building construction/renovation as required.
- Repairs roofs.
- Assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical components and equipment
fixtures, ballasts, circuits, security lights, ground lights, etc.; changes light bulbs as needed.
- Repairs mechanical and electrical locks and locking systems.
- Assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of various plumbing systems and
- Assists in maintaining and repairing HVAC and refrigeration systems as well as equipment;
- Provides instruction and leadership of maintenance workers and inmate workers as assigned.
- Maintains assigned tools and equipment.
- Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed.
- Maintains attendance records for payroll timekeeping purposes for state trustees.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by education in carpentry, building construction, electrical, other building trade(s) or a closely related field.
Requires at least two (2) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Electrical maintenance and repair certifications desired.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
