Job Summary:
The Maintenance Specialist performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping tasks to ensure the Park District’s outdoor facilities, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, and landscaped areas are safe, functional, and well-maintained. Working under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor, the Maintenance Specialist provides hands-on support for daily operations, special projects, and seasonal needs across the District.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Perform general grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, mulching, planting, watering, and debris removal.
- Assist with athletic field preparation including lining, dragging, and turf care.
- Conduct playground inspections and minor repairs to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Perform minor carpentry, painting, and repair work on park shelters, fences, benches, and related amenities.
- Operate and maintain grounds equipment including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, and small tools.
- Assist with irrigation system monitoring and basic repairs.
- Support snow removal, ice control, and storm damage clean-up.
- Report vandalism, safety hazards, or facility maintenance needs to the Grounds Supervisor.
- Provide set-up and tear-down support for programs, events, and rentals in outdoor spaces.
- Follow OSHA safety standards and Park District risk management practices at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of daily work, inspections, and maintenance activities.
- Assist with training and supervision of seasonal and community service workers as assigned.
- Actively engage in continuing education, professional associations, and certifications (e.g., CPRP/CPRE or equivalent) to remain current with best practices, industry standards, and legislative changes impacting Illinois park districts.
- Performs other related duties to meet the district's Mission and Vision.
- High school diploma or GED required. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or facility repair preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
- Knowledge of groundskeeping, landscaping, and general park maintenance practices.
- Basic skills in carpentry, painting, plumbing, or electrical repair.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment.
- Understanding of playground and athletic field maintenance standards.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety procedures and proper use of chemicals and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and task-prioritization skills.
- Good communication skills for interacting with staff, volunteers, and the public.
