Dermatology Technician Responsibilities
As a Veterinary Dermatology Technician, you will play a key role in supporting diagnostic workups, treatments, and long-term management of dermatologic conditions.
Dermatology Patient Care
- Assist with dermatology exams and patient assessments
- Support care for patients with:
- Chronic allergies (atopic dermatitis)
- Otitis (ear infections)
- Skin infections (bacterial and fungal)
- Autoimmune and immune-mediated skin conditions
- Provide ongoing support for long-term dermatology cases
- Perform and assist with:
- Skin scrapings
- Cytology (ear and skin)
- Fungal cultures and diagnostic sampling
- Prepare and handle samples for accurate diagnostic results
- Assist with allergy testing and related procedures
- Administer medications and treatments as directed
- Assist with:
- Medicated baths and topical therapies
- Minor dermatologic procedures
- Support sedation/anesthesia for dermatology procedures when needed
- Educate clients on:
- Chronic condition management
- Medication administration
- At-home care and treatment compliance
- Reinforce treatment plans and ensure client understanding
- Build long-term relationships with clients managing chronic conditions
- Maintain accurate, detailed medical records
- Ensure proper documentation of diagnostics and treatment plans
- Maintain dermatology equipment and exam rooms
- Support an organized and efficient workflow
Required Experience
- 2 years of experience in:
- General practice, specialty, or high-volume veterinary setting
- Strong background in:
- Patient care and clinical nursing skills
- Experience with:
- Sample collection and lab handling
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, client-focused environment
- RVT / LVT / CVT credentials (highly valued, not required)
- Prior experience in:
- Dermatology or allergy-heavy caseloads
- Strong cytology skills and diagnostic familiarity
- Experience with client education and long-term case management
