What are the responsibilities and job description for the Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Physician Assistant (PA) – PRN / Part-Time position at DoctorsNow Walk-In Care?
Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) / Physician Assistant (PA) – PRN / Part-Time
DoctorsNow Walk-In Care is seeking an experienced, dependable, and patient-focused Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our urgent care team on a PRN or part-time basis.
This position will primarily be based at our Altoona clinic, with availability required for shifts at our Johnston and West Des Moines locations as needed.
We are looking for a provider with urgent care experience who is confident managing a broad range of acute illnesses and injuries, comfortable performing common urgent care procedures, and capable of providing efficient, high-quality patient care in a busy outpatient setting.
This position is specifically for urgent care coverage, rather than a traditional primary care role. Our urgent care services also include walk-in occupational medicine, workers' compensation, DOT physicals, and other employer-related healthcare services.
Because of our current staffing needs, this is not an entry-level advanced practice provider position. Candidates must have at least one year of recent, hands-on urgent care experience practicing as a licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
The successful candidate should be comfortable managing typical urgent care visits with appropriate clinical autonomy, sound medical judgment, and timely documentation, with physician consultation and collaboration available as appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat pediatric and adult patients presenting with acute illnesses and injuries, consistent with training, certification, and clinical privileges.
- Manage common urgent care conditions, including respiratory infections, ear and throat complaints, gastrointestinal illnesses, urinary complaints, skin conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, and other acute medical concerns.
- Obtain appropriate patient histories, perform focused physical examinations, and develop evidence-based treatment plans.
- Order, interpret, and act on diagnostic testing, including point-of-care tests, laboratory studies, EKGs, and imaging when clinically indicated.
- Perform common urgent care procedures within demonstrated competency, including laceration repair, suturing, incision and drainage, and other minor procedures.
- Evaluate and manage sprains, strains, minor fractures, lacerations, and other common injuries.
- Recognize potentially serious or emergent conditions and arrange appropriate emergency department transfers or higher levels of care.
- Prescribe medications and provide appropriate patient education, follow-up recommendations, and return precautions.
- Provide walk-in occupational medicine services, including evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries.
- Manage workers' compensation visits, including initial evaluations, appropriate follow-up care, work restrictions, and return-to-work recommendations.
- Perform occupational health examinations and DOT physicals when appropriately qualified and certified.
- Complete accurate, thorough, and timely electronic medical documentation using athenahealth.
- Communicate professionally with patients, clinical staff, employers, specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Work collaboratively with clinical staff to maintain efficient patient flow and a high standard of patient care.
- Follow DoctorsNow clinical policies, patient privacy requirements, and applicable professional practice standards.
- Provide occasional urgent care coverage at other DoctorsNow clinic locations as operational needs require.
Required Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted Iowa licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
- Appropriate national board certification and qualifications for the patient populations treated.
- At least one year of recent, hands-on clinical experience practicing as a licensed NP or PA in an urgent care setting.
- Experience independently evaluating and managing a broad range of urgent care illnesses and injuries within the provider's authorized scope and practice arrangements.
- Experience evaluating both acute medical complaints and minor traumatic injuries.
- Demonstrated competency in common urgent care procedures, including wound care, suturing, incision and drainage, and splinting.
- Ability to appropriately evaluate pediatric and adult urgent care patients within the provider's education, certification, and clinical privileges.
- Strong clinical judgment, including the ability to identify patients requiring emergency evaluation or higher levels of care.
- Experience ordering and interpreting diagnostic testing, including laboratory studies, EKGs, and imaging.
- Experience using electronic health records and completing timely clinical documentation.
- Current BLS certification.
- DEA registration and applicable Iowa controlled-substance registration, as required for the position's prescribing responsibilities.
- Strong communication skills, professionalism, and dependable attendance.
- Ability to work efficiently and manage patient flow in a busy urgent care environment.
- Availability for some evening and weekend shifts.
- Willingness and ability to work primarily at the Altoona clinic, with occasional coverage at Johnston and West Des Moines as needed.
Previous RN experience, student clinical rotations, or employment in primary care, emergency medicine, or another specialty without actual NP/PA urgent care experience does not independently satisfy the one-year urgent care experience requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience practicing as an NP or PA in urgent care.
- Experience in a busy, high-volume urgent care clinic.
- Strong proficiency with common urgent care procedures, including suturing, incision and drainage, splinting, and wound management.
- Experience treating both pediatric and adult urgent care patients.
- Experience managing occupational injuries and workers' compensation cases.
- Familiarity with occupational medicine workflows, including employer-directed services, work restrictions, and return-to-work evaluations.
- Current FMCSA National Registry Medical Examiner certification for DOT physicals, or willingness to obtain certification.
- Experience using athenahealth or a similar electronic health record.
- Current ACLS and/or PALS certification.
- Ability to work efficiently with clinical support staff while maintaining high-quality medical decision-making and documentation.
