The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented professional to serve as a Corrections Lieutenant Colonel, a key leadership role within the institution. This position is critical to maintaining effective prison operations within a secure correctional environment while ensuring strong employee relations, policy compliance, and workforce development. In this role, the incumbent will assist the Chief of Security in overseeing the unit management system of security. Responsibilities include performing highly responsible supervisory and administrative security work involving the organization, coordination, and direction of institutional security operations to ensure the safe and effective management of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
2. One year of experience in any field; OR
3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Captain in State service.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Incumbent will assist the Chief of Security in supervision of the unit management system of security by performing highly responsible supervisory and administrative security work in the organization, coordination and direction of security.
  • Duties involve responsibility for assisting in the planning of security procedures and regulations for the care, custody and control of inmates.
  • Supervise all security functions and security staff. Required to have extensive knowledge of mandatory security posts, department regulations and penitentiary directives
  • Address all complaints or problems from the inmates and take corrective action if necessary or guide them to the appropriate staff for resolution.

Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE
  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

    • This is a 24-hour facility.
