The Corrections Lieutenant Colonel for the Internal Affairs Division serves in a critical leadership role, overseeing complex and sensitive investigations that uphold the integrity and accountability of the organization. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong investigative expertise, the ability to manage multiple high-level cases, and the leadership skills to guide senior staff. The ideal candidate will excel in fast-paced environments, deliver clear and timely briefings to executive leadership, and ensure all investigative processes comply with legal standards, policy, and State Civil Service rules.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
2. One year of experience in any field; OR
3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Captain in State service.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Lead Complex Investigations: Direct and oversee high-level, sensitive internal investigations, ensuring thorough, timely, and compliant outcomes while managing multiple cases simultaneously. Conduct and deliver investigative and intelligence briefings to executive leadership with little notice.
  • Strategic Case Oversight: Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all active investigations within the division to guide investigative direction, support decision-making, and provide detailed briefings to senior officials.
  • Ensure Legal & Policy Compliance: Apply advanced knowledge of evidentiary standards, applicable case law, and State Civil Service rules to ensure all investigative processes meet legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Division Leadership & Direction: Supervise and mentor Major-level staff, coordinating individual and team efforts to complete investigations, analyze findings, and evaluate operational policies.
  • Operational Analysis & Recommendations: Lead the review of investigative data and internal policies to develop actionable recommendations for the Internal Affairs Colonel and Chief of Operations, driving accountability and continuous improvement.
  • High-Level Coordination: Collaborate with executive leadership and key stakeholders to ensure alignment on investigative priorities, outcomes, and organizational objectives.


Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probation, or Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of LA DPS&C - CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

  • Current permanent classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
Compensation: The maximum amounts listed are the maximum salary amounts a person can make at each level over their career and NOT the amount we are allowed to pay a new hire.

    • This is a 24 hour facility.
