Duties

Help

  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief with supervisory and management oversight responsibilities to develop, plan, update, coordinate, conduct and monitor organizational/installation technical services programs (Continued on next)
  • (Cont.) and training concerning fire suppression, specialized rescue, hazardous material, Emergency Medical, Disaster Preparedness Services, Fire Prevention and Public Education Programs.
  • Supervise subordinate employees and provides guidance in the development, implementation and delivery of technical services training, prevention, and public education programs for installation personnel.
  • Ensure building and facility pre-plans, fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, water distribution systems (fire hydrants), life safety features and extinguishers are up-to-date and properly maintained.
  • Review building plans, scope(s) of work, and design of fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems to ensure compliance with Unified Facilities Criteria, DOD/DLA regulations as well as nationally recognized standards such as (Continued on Next)
  • (Cont.) those promulgated by organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
  • Respond to emergency incidents and assumes immediate control until relieved by Assistant Fire Chief for Emergency Operations or the Fire Chief.

  • Certifications/Licenses: Fire Officer 3, Firefighter 3, Fire Inspector 3, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, Valid State Drivers License
  • Bargaining Unit Status: No
  • Individual must complete a pre-employment and an annual medical exam IAW DoD 6055.05-M to determine the reasonable likelihood of a firefighter’s ability to execute the arduous and rigorous essential functions of fire suppression and rescue.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Supervisory Fire Protection Specialist, your resume and supporting documentation must support:

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-11 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
  • Developing and managing a Fire and Emergency Services training program.
  • Performing fire prevention and life safety inspections.
  • Determining proper emergency response/equipment needs in an emergency situation.
  • Reviewing plans and applying proper codes according to regulatory requirements.

AND

  • SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SPF): Department of Defense (DoD) 6055.06-M, "Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program" identifies the level of performance required for all DoD Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The certifications listed below are the minimum mandatory certification requirements for this position. DoD Incumbents shall possess DoD Certifications, or equivalent accredited certifications from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board):

Accredited Certification:

  • Fire Officer III
  • Fire Instructor III
  • Fire Inspector III
  • HAZMAT Incident Commander

State Of (Ohio, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania) Certifications

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Basic**

** If you do not possess a certification for the state in which you are applying, you MUST have National Registry certification and be eligible for reciprocity requirements.

Licenses

  • Valid State Driver's License

Other training requirements that must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained:

  • Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVOC)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

Additional information

This position is being filled as Term not-to-exceed (NTE)two years, and not more than six years. This Term Appointment may also be converted to a Career or Career Conditional appointment without further announcement. In order to be eligible for conversion, you must serve at least two years of continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service and your performance must be at least Fully Successful.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, norfentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids.

ADVISORY: Use of cannabidiol (CBD) products may result in a positive drug test for marijuana. DLA employees are subject to Federal law and under Federal law, Marijuana is a Schedule I drug and is illegal.
