As an extremely fast-growing company, we rely on tight financial controls and precise project management to deliver on our promises. We are looking for a high-performing, seasoned CPA to take complete ownership of our financial infrastructure, manage our growth, and ensure every detail is perfectly tracked.
The Role
We are seeking an expert-level Financial Controller and In-House CPA to serve as the strategic financial leader of DJW Homes. This is a highly autonomous, hands-on role designed for a professional who can seamlessly navigate both high-level tax strategy and the daily operational details of construction accounting. Working closely with the owner, you will build and optimize our accounting setups, manage full tax preparation, oversee complex job costing, and ensure absolute compliance across all projects.
Key Responsibilities
Tax, Strategy & Financial Setup
- Comprehensive Tax Preparation: Handle all corporate tax planning, compliance, and full tax preparation, ensuring the company maximizes its tax positioning.
- Accounting Infrastructure: Design, implement, and optimize the company's accounting systems and internal controls for scalability and efficiency.
- Strategic Reporting: Prepare and analyze advanced financial reports (Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Budget vs. Actuals, Cash Flow Forecasting) to advise the owner on business health and growth strategies.
Advanced Job Costing & Financial Operations
- Precision Job Costing: Oversee the accurate coding and allocation of all expenses to specific house builds. Maintain real-time Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting so we know the exact financial status of every active job.
- Accounts Payable (A/P): Verify and process invoices from subcontractors and vendors. Ensure bills are paid efficiently while managing positive vendor relationships.
- Accounts Receivable (A/R) & Draws: Manage complex client invoicing and meticulously track construction draws and payments from banks and homeowners.
- Reconciliations: Ensure all bank and credit card accounts are flawlessly reconciled month-end and year-end.
Operations, Compliance & Contracts
- Subcontractor Compliance: Track subcontractor insurance certificates (COIs), W-9s, and licenses. Monitor deadlines to ensure no lapse in compliance, and guarantee all paperwork is secured before payment is released.
- Lien Waivers: Strictly manage, track, and execute all lien waivers from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Bidding & Contract Support: Assist in the financial review of bids, contracts, and change orders, ensuring all agreements comply with company standards.
- Systems Management: Maintain pristine, up-to-date records in Transaction Desk, Buildertrend, and QuickBooks. Organize and track contracts, warranties, and key project documents.
What You Bring to the Table
- Expert-Level Experience: 10 years of high-level financial management, preferably with extensive and proven experience in the construction, home building, or real estate development industry.
- CPA Designation: An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.
- Tax Mastery: Proven experience handling full corporate tax preparation and strategic tax planning for businesses.
- Software Proficiency: Deeply proficient in QuickBooks (Desktop/Online) and Microsoft Excel. Experience with construction management software (i.e. Buildertrend) is highly preferred.
- Detail-Obsessed & Proactive: You are meticulous about accuracy. You understand that a small error in job costing can throw off a project’s entire budget, and you proactively fix issues before they arise.
- Integrity & Autonomy: You will operate as the financial backbone of the company; high ethical standards, absolute confidentiality, and the ability to work completely self-directed are non-negotiable.
