The Lake Shore Central School District is seeking qualified candidates for the following position:
Public Relations Specialist
Reports to: Superintendent of Schools / Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Building Location: Districtwide - Home Base will be located in the District Office
The Public Relations Specialist position is a Civil Service Competitive position. The work involves assisting in a variety of public and media relations, marketing and communications programs and activities to enhance and promote understanding and awareness of District programs and services. The incumbent oversees public information and conducts research and information studies related to District activities. Work is performed under the direct supervision of higher level administrative staff with leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required.
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Develops and supports public relations and marketing communications objectives to enhance and promote understanding and awareness of District programs and services.
- Executes assigned projects to meet the objectives of the District public relations programs
- Helps initiate positive, proactive media relations, assisting in coordination of news conferences and interviews and follow up with media regarding news coverage
- Assists in responding to routine questions from visitors, community and media representatives regarding functions of the District
- Writes, edits, prepares and distributes material for print and digital publications
- Prepares news articles, media updates/kits, public relations and marketing materials
- Distributes media communications and news releases
- Monitors media placement and publications of press releases, photos, advertisements and other materials related to the District
- Develops, posts and updates District web site and social media communications
- Monitors social media references regarding the District
- Assists in proof-reading and copy-editing of administrative communications as requested.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, instructive meetings and workshops
- Attends meetings as required
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
Thorough knowledge of the channels and techniques of public communications; thorough knowledge of the field of public relations; good knowledge of the District services and programs; working knowledge of design, marketing and promotional techniques; ability to address audiences effectively; ability to write clear, concise and appropriate copy for various media; ability to develop and maintain harmonious relations with the press and the general public; resourcefulness; good judgment; tact; initiative; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
- As specified by Erie County Department of Personnel/Civil Service
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations or communications and two (2) years of experience in a position with public responsibilities; or:
- Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and four (4) years of experience in a position with public relations responsibility; or:
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements
