The Lake Shore Central School District is seeking qualified candidates for the following position:
Academic and Cultural Competence Coordinator
Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Instruction / Superintendent of Schools
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Building Location: Districtwide - Home Base will be located in the William G. Houston Middle School
Position: This position is a Civil Service Competitive position
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves planning for and coordinating enriching cultural and academic experiences for K-12 Native American students within a public-school district. The incumbent participates primarily with Native American students in and out of the classroom, throughout the school building, on field trips, community outings and in work experience placements and collaborates with other education professionals as needed to support learning and strengthen cultural awareness. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Administrative Liaison for Native American Programs or other higher-level building Administrator. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Plans, leads and advocates for cultural experiences for K-12 student population, including immersion of culture within school environment; Communicates daily with stakeholders regarding student progress, needs/concerns, attendance, and provides information to teachers to assist in developing appropriate cultural learning experiences; Attends Native Voices and other regional, state and local conferences and meetings; Assists in data collection and analysis to support student learning and behavior; Assists with developing and implementing student behavior intervention plans and classroom behavior management programs; Reinforces classroom and school rules as identified by building Administrators and classroom teachers;
Assists students with strengthening their executive functioning including organizational strategies for daily activities, developing social skills and increasing their self-control and independence; Partners with Native American families and community for input on connectedness to school, academic performance and culture connections; Collaborates with various school professionals on special projects;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of Native American culture relative to the local area; working knowledge of the concepts related to the environmental and personal factors influencing the lives of local Native Americans; knowledge of current principles and practices of effective cultural competence education, including cultural identity, biases and experiences of privilege and marginalization; ability to effectively communicate the goals and interests of local Native Americans; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; proficiency utilizing a variety of electronic software applications; ability to research and plan small and large-scale cultural events; ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to train and/or supervise others; ability to understand and prepare written material; empathetic and respectful; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree* in Human Services, Cultural Studies, Education or closely related fields and two (2) years of experience planning, supporting and/or delivering services or programming to members of a Native American community.
Possession of a Master’s degree* in Human Services, Cultural Studies, Education or closely related fields may be substituted for required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License and use of private transportation for the performance of duties at time of and throughout duration of appointment.

- Examples of Human Services or closely related fields: Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Health and Human Development, Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Treatment; Child and Family Development/Services, Criminal Justice; Gerontology; Special Education, Public Health and Law.
- Examples of Cultural Studies or closely related fields: Sociology, Anthropology, Gender/Ethnic/Media Studies, American Studies, African American Studies, Latin American Studies or International Studies
