Job Title: DISTRICT MAIL/GROUNDS KEEPER
Reports to: Director of Maintenance /Shop Foreman/Grounds Foreman
Dept./School: Maintenance
Primary Purpose:
Perform general maintenance and repair of building structures and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary systems throughout district.
Maintain safe and attractive grounds and landscaping for the district. Maintain athletic fields.
Help mechanics repair and maintain all district vehicles.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (CDL / Class B) or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Knowledge of basic construction and routine maintenance and repair procedures
Ability to communicate effectively (verbally)
Ability to operate hand and power tools
Ability to work independently
Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision
Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
Ability to pass required bus driver safety training
Acceptable driving record
Ability to operate bus
Experience:
One year experience in general building maintenance, minor vehicle repair and maintenance.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair - General Maintenance
1. Assist skilled workers with repair and maintenance of district facilities, including repairing woodwork; replacing electrical switches, fixtures, and motors; painting, repairing, and replacing plumbing fixtures and drainage systems; and replacing broken glass.
2. Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; perform maintenance and minor repairs.
3. Detect and report needed major repairs on building structures and their systems, including lockers, furniture, and equipment.
4. Complete repairs as requested on work orders or by maintenance foreman.
5. Assist with mowing and detailing of district grounds.
6. Assist with relocation of furnishings, such as desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, etc.
7. Move, install, assemble, and repair all school furniture and playground equipment as needed.
8. Hang pictures, mirrors, blackboards, bulletin boards, projection screens, towel dispensers, soap dispensers, and other items as required.
9. Install door and window assemblies and hardware, including window glass and screens.
10. Install ceiling and flooring materials.
11. Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
12. Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
13. Assist in setting up facilities for special events.
14. Care for trees, shrubs, and flowers by watering, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.
15. Assist with the preparation of athletic fields for games, including chalking fields.
16. Water grounds and apply fertilizer.
17. Collect and dispose of leaves, dirt, rubbish, and refuse from district facilities.
Grounds and Landscaping
- Mow and detail all district grounds, including athletic fields.
- Follow scheduled maintenance plan to care for lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers by watering, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.
- Plant shrubs and vegetation.
- Assist with the preparation of athletic fields for games, including chalking fields.
- Collect and dispose of leaves, dirt, rubbish, and refuse from district facilities.
- Assist with the inspection, repair, and installation of sprinkler systems.
Maintenance and Repairs - Bus Mechanic Helper
- Repair seat surfaces on buses as needed.
- Perform mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, and accessories.
- Perform visual inspection of vehicles and report any defects or repairs as need.
- Disassemble simple components and clean parts for reassembly.
- Assist mechanics with lifting and maneuvering heavy parts and components.
- Request parts and tools for mechanics as needed.
- Service vehicles according to established preventative maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
- Help in maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
- Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
- Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
- Do welding and perform minor body work.
Service
- Fuel buses and maintain accurate records of use.
- Check tire air pressure and fill as needed.
- Check oil and other fluid levels and replace fluids as needed.
- Clean outside of bus including glass, lights, and mirrors.
- Sweep and clean inside of buses as needed.
District Mail Route
Deliver district interoffice mail and post office mail as directed.
Driving
1. Operate light truck to transport furniture and equipment throughout district.
2. Operate Bus as needed and be familiar with bus routes.
3. Assist in training new drivers.
Safety
1. Operate equipment and use tools following established safety procedures.
2. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
3. Correct unsafe conditions in the area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
4. Maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.
Equipment Used:
Heavy equipment, including trencher, and grader blade; tractor and mower; riding and power mower; gas-powered weed trimmer; blower; edger; garden and hand tools
Wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, torque wrench, jack, and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles.
