Position:  Educational Sign Language Interpreter

 

Location:   Middle School

 

Schedule: 7.5 hours per day, Student Days   

 

Position Available: Start August 12, 2026 with possible training or events prior

Compensation: 

  • $24.25-26.77 per hour, starting, depending on experience.
  • If bilingual (English/Spanish) $26.77 - $29.56 per hour, starting, depending on experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Educational Sign Language Interpreter

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Level:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to meet NDE Rule 51 criteria for sign language interpreters
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or completion of interpreter preparation program preferred

Certification/Licensure:

  • Drivers License
  • First Aid/CPR certificate desired

Experience Desired:

  • Previous work experience as an Educational Sign Language Interpreter is desired  

Other Requirements:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Understanding of basic reading and math skills

 

REPORTS TO: Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Building Principal, and Director of Special Education

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions of each employee’s position include (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; and (3) the ability to perform the physical requirements on their specific job description.

 

Basic:

  • Educational Interpreters provide interpreting and other support services to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing participating in inclusive, mainstreamed or self-contained settings within the school district. The educational interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication between students, staff, peers, families, and the school community to ensure equitable access to instruction, school activities, and services in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. 




Frequent:

  • Facilitates communication among the student who is D/HH, peers and adults using the preferred communication of the student, in all school settings. 
  • Discuss the role of the educational interpreter with the general education teacher(s) 
  • Provide information to teachers regarding the physical environment and accessibility. 
  • Confer with educators to plan for interpreting.
  • Interpret extracurricular activities when requested. 
  • Provide academic support, when appropriate, under the supervision of the Teacher of the D/HH. 
  • Attend staff meetings when appropriate. 
  • Comply with NDE Rule 51 guidelines. 
  • Participate as a member of the IEP team, contributing information about the student’s language/communication needs and how the student is functioning with an interpreter. 
  • Complete all required paperwork on time. 
  • Support implementation of the goals, accommodations and modifications on the IEP. 
  • Keep informed of current trends, and complete professional development hours to keep current, in the field of interpreting. 
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students in addition to a positive and professional working relationship with other staff and administration. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of information, concerning students, colleagues, and parents in accordance with school district policies and state/federal regulations. 
  • Adhere to the code of ethics of interpreting as well as all school district policies. 
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and students. Refer parents to teachers or administrators if they have concerns. 
  • When not actively interpreting, the Educational Interpreter may provide general classroom assistance or instructional support.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher and/or administrative staff.

Climatic Environment:   Primary work environment is a heated /air-conditioned classroom/building, and at times, the work environment may include off-campus sites. (Certain classrooms/buildings may be air-conditioned)
