POSITION TITLE:  Head Baseball Coach

 

REPORTS TO:  Athletic Director

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:  Assist and guide participating student athletes and help them achieve a high level of skill, discipline, sportsmanship, and citizenship. To oversee and promote the baseball program in accordance with NFHS, NDHSAA, and Stanley School Board policies.

SALARY:  Based on Extracurricular Salary Schedule

 

HEAD COACH GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cooperate with the administration and other staff members in submitting a roster, pre-season checklist, post-season summary report, inventory and requisitions, monthly schedule.
  • Provide each participant with the NDHSAA Eligibility Rules and Stanley Code of Conduct Guidelines, verify that the parent's and student's signatures are on file in the office, and ensure that an ineligible athlete is not permitted to participate against any opposing team.
  • Balance competitive, academic, and social demands within the program.
  • Report to the district athletic director any incidents or infractions relevant to the activity.
  • Develop and demonstrate good public relations within the school and community by scheduling a pre-season meeting for parents and athletes.
  • Understand and enforce the athletic department Communication Guidelines.
  • Provide each participant with the requirements for lettering and awards; enforce the extracurricular participation guidelines.
  • Cooperate with media regarding requests for public information. This includes assigning an assistant coach or manager to report scores to all local media following each home game.
  • Work toward professional growth by participation in clinics, workshops, and inservice meetings in order to achieve personal and professional objectives.
  • Actively promote your sport and recruit participation.
  • Develop respect by example both on and off the field in appearance, personal habits, behavior, language and enthusiasm.
  • Provide an inventory of all equipment/uniforms as requested and file with the district athlete director. Notify the athletic director of needed maintenance on all equipment, supplies, and facilities. Develop a record keeping system for issuing and requesting return of all athletic gear/uniforms. The head coach is responsible to see that all equipment and uniforms are well taken care of, repaired, and properly stored at the end of the season. All uniforms and equipment for athletics should be turned in and inventoried within two weeks of the end of the season. Coaches in spring sports must collect and inventory all equipment and uniforms prior to check-out and evaluation.
  • Organize daily practices and game day procedures.
  • Provide the athletic and activities directors with a monthly schedule of all meetings, practices, games, and performances and report any changes as soon as possible.
  • Supervise all practices and locker rooms before and after practice.
  • Monitor lockers, storage areas, and coach's room for general maintenance after practices and games, ensure that supplies and equipment are properly stored, lights are turned off and doors are locked.
  • Accompany the athletes whenever they are participating and administer disciplinary action when needed, including bus trips. Coaches are responsible to lock all doors if his/her team is the last to leave the school leaving for or coming from out-of-town games. Upon returning and re-entering the school, the coach must see that no students are left in the building and all the doors are locked.
  • Ensure that the participants are dressed in accordance with extracurricular and school guidelines when representing your school.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship and establish guidelines for sportsmanship on the part of the players.
  • Provide leadership and attitudes that produce positive competitive opportunities for the participants.
  • Display appropriate sideline conduct at games toward players, officials and other workers.
  • Instruct athletes in the fundamentals and the safety practices of the sport as well as training and conditioning the athletes for a sport.
  • Develop individual and team discipline and control.
  • Report any injuries and assist the school’s Athletic Trainer when necessary.
  • Report any discipline issues to the building principal.
  • Ensure that Wednesday practices have concluded by 5:45 PM following the district Family Night policy. Avoid scheduling any program activities on Sundays when possible.
  • Follow district policies in program fundraising including channeling all income through the proper channels. A coach should never be in possession of a large sum of money for the payment of a program’s bills.
  • Complete the Contract Request form and submit to the District Athletic Director prior to the start of the season. § Complete the Purchase Order Request form and submit to the District Athletic Director at the end of the season. § Initiate and administer the advancement of middle school athlete’s protocol when applicable.
  • Attend or complete the required NDHSAA rules clinic. Coaches not attending the required clinic will be assessed the NDHSAA fine.
  • Complete the required NDHSAA rules test; coaches not completing the test on time will be assessed the NDHSAA fine.
  • Coordinate bus leave times with the athletic director. Be sure to minimize the amount of time that students are missing school for the activity.
  • Assist the athletic director in creating the team’s game schedule.
  • Become a member of the North Dakota High School Coaches Association, and encourage all assistant coaches to join.
  • Monitor the entire coaching staff’s adherence to the 14 Legal Duties of Athletic Personnel.
  • Monitor and enforce Title IX legislation and sexual harassment guidelines.
  • Monitor and enforce the district’s bullying and hazing policies.
  • Work with the school activities director regarding building schedules for your activity. § Follow policies and guidelines specific to your activity.
  • Coordinate set-up and take-down of any sport specific apparatus for practices and games.
  • Work with the athletic director in sending in required information (participant lists, rosters, stats, etc.) for various tournaments, invites, games, etc.
  • Coordinate a senior and/or parent recognition night during the season.
  • Attend applicable conference and state coaches’ meetings.
  • Clearly publish and distribute lettering and award criteria, conduct guidelines, and expectations.
  • Monitor NDHSAA regulations regarding amount of allowed participation per athlete and per team.
  • Assist in monitoring and enforcing the NDHSAA rules regarding out of season athlete participation.
  • Adhere to high school building level conduct and appearance guidelines and policies.
  • Adhere to any applicable NDHSAA by-laws regarding student amateurism and allowable coaching practices.
