Job Summary: The role of the Director of Special Education is to manage the day-to-day operations of the special education programs, services, and staff.
Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications:
- Fully approved as a Director of Special Education through the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a director or supervisor of special education
Required qualifications:
- Temporary or continuing temporary approval as a Director of Special Education through the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
- Valid Michigan administrative certificate
Skills/Knowledge:
- Utilization of student and school performance data to improve student achievement
- Effective practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for special education student populations
- Curriculum alignment strategies to ensure focus and coherence within and across grade levels
- Principles and practices of administrative management, including strategic planning, budgeting, and contract management
- Legal, ethical, and professional best practices
- Strong capacity to foster effective relationships and communication, verbally and in writing, with stakeholders (e.g., students, families, staff members, and the broader community)
- Ability to foster and maintain equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for all students, families, and employees
- Effective uses of technology in the service of teaching and learning

Essential Job Functions:
- Develop, disseminate, and guide best practices for special education in collaboration with school leadership
- Direct the implementation of and ensure compliance with state and federal legislation and Board Policy related to special education
- Prepare and coordinate all monitoring visits and audits related to special education
- Oversee the development, compliance, implementation, and maintenance of all Individualized Education Plans (IEP)
- Supervise the procedures for placement, evaluation, and re-determination of eligibility
- Connect students’ families to statewide and/or community resources as needed
- Ensure that special education students are integrated in all school activities
- Ensure that general education and special education teachers and staff work collaboratively to ensure academic success for all students
- Assist with the design and development of special education professional development programs
- Assist with recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of special education teachers, itinerants, and paraprofessionals
- Maintain regular communication with itinerant and special education personnel
- Implement and monitor Medicaid billing procedures
- Review and evaluate special education curriculum
- Supervise special education transportation tracking
- Supervise and coordinate homebound and hospitalized student instruction
- Supervise and maintain the budget of the Special Education Department
- Supervise the post-secondary transition program
- Respond to stakeholder concerns in a timely and professional manner
- Advance school district policies, procedures, and initiatives in pursuit of transformative change within the district
- Consistent and reliable attendance
- Perform other related duties as assigned

We are located within the city limits of Cedar Springs, Michigan in Kent County. Cedar Springs Public Schools is one of 20 member public school districts within the Kent Intermediate School District (KISD). We are unique in that our schools are all located within a single campus setting with the exception of the Middle School which is located 1 mile south of the main campus.
