SUMMARY OF PURPOSE

 

This position is responsible for providing students with an educational environment that is safe, clean, attractive, and pleasant. The position is responsible for providing a clean, orderly, and sanitized building which presents a positive atmosphere for students and handling some special detail that are different than others. The incumbent works with other members of the Department in meeting department goals and objectives in support of the ELANCO mission to provide a social and educational environment for the students.

 

Essential Functions

  1. Clean conference rooms, classrooms, the cafeteria, stairways, and corridors in an acceptable manner including dry/wet mopping, scrubbing, waxing, sweeping, vacuuming, waxing floors dusting; straightening and setting up furniture, washing tables/desks and blackboards; and emptying trash bins and pencil sharpeners.
  2. Cleans restrooms, which includes sinks and toilets and refills paper towel dispenser, toilet paper dispenser and feminine vending machine.
  3. Performs minor maintenance such as changing light bulbs, setting up furniture.
  4. Maintains all custodial storage areas. –RESTOCK of product is required and essential for performance of duties.
  5. Assist with HVAC projects in the building when necessary.
  6. Assist maintenance custodial department with snow removal
  7. Required to open and close buildings, secures all doors and windows and regulating heating and lighting as necessary.
  8. Assist with set-up for events both extracurricular and athletics when required.
  9. Follow all safety procedures when cleaning, mopping, waxing, repairing/replacing lights, ceiling tiles, etc.
  10. Assist all any additional custodial and maintenance requests through the support help desk ticket process.
  11. Requests supplies and custodial equipment as necessary.
  12. Ensures that requests are performed in a priority manner.
  13. Conducts periodic inspections of all school facilities for cleanliness and safety.
  14. Identifies maintenance problems and channels work to the maintenance staff.
  15. Carries two-way radio and responds to night building security requests.
  16. Custodial Support:
    1. Coordinate that all general cleaning supplies
    2. Floor care and cleaning supplies
    3. Hand Tools for minor projects and clean-up requirements
    4. Safety and Personal Protection = gloves, masks, googles, etc.
    5. Trash and Recycling
    6. Specialty Items – such as fresheners, odor neutralizers, etc.
    7. Equipment Preventive Maintenance – tool kits, lubricants, other items to make sure equipment is in proper condition.

DEPARTMENT/ORGANIZATION

  • Keeps current with related technology and developments that impact on the department.
  • Makes decisions consistent with the district mission and core values, establishes and maintains effective communication and positive relationships within ELANCO.
  • Performs other functions as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Contributes to the effective team management of all issues and opportunities within ELANCO.
  • Maintains an optimum relationship with other staff members by being courteous and always mindful of the importance of confidentiality.

Marginal Functions will vary with the specific assignment and depend on the particular position function for which the person is responsible.

 

SCOPE AND IMPACT

 

This position accomplishes many, but not most of its tasks through standard procedures, exercising independent judgment when necessary.  Internal contacts include teachers, office staff, principals, students, community members, and other school district personnel.  External contacts include parents, IU staff members, outside vendors, no supervisory responsibility is involved in this position.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

This position requires a thorough knowledge of the numerous detailed processes and procedures of maintenance and facility services.  A high school diploma is necessary, any certifications a plus, as well as a minimum of three years to five years general maintenance and custodial experience. The position requires knowledge of cleaning, facilities and inventory procedures and customer service personality a must.

Position requires the following skills: demonstrate understanding of working with computer software and the Microsoft office products; be highly organized; possess good communication skills, both written and verbal; be confidential at all times; act as a team player; be positive; able to learn new skills; able to work independently and use good judgment at all times; be self-motivated; demonstrate flexibility toward the tasks and the school; able to multi-task; maintain composure at all times; be able to accept responsibility; be able to operate machines and equipment and deal with constant change. Patience and a professional manner are also essential. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with building staff, district staff, students, parents, and other community members. Valid drivers license is required for the position.

 

In addition, the position must be able to work, with interruptions, or multiple projects in process simultaneously. The position must be able to act appropriately in emergency situations.

 

Temperament: Must possess excellent interpersonal skills; must be cooperative, congenial, and service oriented and must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions. Position must use empathy and understanding. Must be able to remain calm in what can become a stressful environment. Must be able to handle confrontational and adversarial situations.

 

Requires submission of pre-employment medical examination

Requires original certificates of clearance for the following three background checks:

  • Department of Human Services Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check
  • Federal Criminal History Record Information (CHRI)

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENT

 

Physical Demands:       Sitting 20%, walking/standing 80%

                                    Ability to reach above and below the waist

                                    Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects

                                    Some stooping, bending, and twisting of the body

                                    Ability to lift and/or carry supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. or more

                                    Ability to move fingers and hands for using technology

                                    Able to go up and down a ladder (when necessary)

                                    Able to remove snow and other outside projects

Sensory Abilities:        Visual and Auditory acuity

                                    Visual acuity to read correspondence and computer screens

                                    Auditory acuity to be able to deal effectively with people

Cognitive Ability:        Ability to communicate effectively

                                    Ability to exercise good judgment

                                    Ability to follow written and verbal directions

                                    Ability to work as a member of a team

                                    Ability to be cooperative, congenial, and service oriented

                                    Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and

                                    limited supervision

                                    Ability to establish facts and draw valid conclusions to solve the problem

Work Environment:    Normal public school environment, building, training room and able to work in outside environment (Cold and warm weather). Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions subject to undesirable elements.
