Role Description

District Green Plants is looking for a creative designer to join our team at our Alexandria, VA design facility.

Initially, this position will focus on creating living orchid arrangements and other botanical designs for the front desks and common areas of commercial office buildings throughout the Washington, DC region. While our team installs the finished arrangements, all design work for this position is completed at our Alexandria design facility. This is not an installation or travel position.

Each arrangement follows client-specific guidelines for size, color palette, plant selection, and container style, while still allowing plenty of room for creativity and personal design. Our living arrangements are designed to thrive in a commercial environment for weeks at a time and to be easily maintained by our interior plant technicians, so an eye for both beauty and practicality is important.

This position offers exceptional flexibility. During the first month or two, we may only need someone for a few hours every couple of weeks, typically when new orchids arrive. Work is performed during normal business hours, but we're flexible on which days and times work best.

As we move into the holiday season, our design workload increases significantly. From August through November, we design and build artificial commercial Christmas décor for office buildings throughout the region, including wreaths, garlands, arrangements, and fully decorated trees. If you're interested, there is an opportunity to increase your schedule to two to four days per week during this busy season, but it is not required. Whether you're looking for just a few hours every couple of weeks or would enjoy taking on more time during the holidays, we'd love to talk.

We're looking for someone who is comfortable working independently and enjoys being part of a collaborative creative process. You'll often receive a design concept along with project requirements—for example, a specific color palette, approved materials, and construction methods that ensure each piece is durable for commercial use. Within those guidelines, you'll have the freedom to create beautiful work while maintaining consistency with our clients' expectations.

Many projects are completed as a team. You may begin a design that another designer finishes, or you may put the finishing touches on someone else's work. The ability to follow established design standards while contributing your own creativity is important.
