Tax Partner

Montgomery County, MD

$250,000 - $350,000 DOE bonus future equity potential

Most Partner opportunities come with one sentence attached.

"Bring us a book of business."

This one doesn't.

Because that's not the problem they're trying to solve.

The clients are already here.

The work is already here.

The opportunity is already here.

What they're looking for is someone who can step into an established leadership position, become the trusted face of the tax practice, and help lead the next chapter of the firm.

If you've built your career around looking after clients, developing people, and running a successful tax practice, rather than constantly chasing new business, this is a genuinely rare opportunity.

Why they're hiring

A long standing Tax Partner is retiring at the beginning of next year.

For years, two Partners have led this office together across tax and audit. As part of the succession plan, the audit responsibilities are already spoken for.

The gap is firmly on the tax side.

Leadership isn't looking for someone to reinvent the business.

They're looking for someone capable of taking ownership of an established client portfolio, leading an experienced team, and becoming the person clients continue to rely on for years to come.

Perhaps the biggest attraction?

You don't need to bring a book of business with you.

The platform already exists.

The relationships already exist.

Now they need the right person to lead them.

What the role actually looks like

This is a genuine leadership role.

You'll oversee an established portfolio spanning a broad range of industries, working with long standing clients who value relationships just as much as technical expertise.

The client base includes:

  • Privately owned businesses
  • Family owned companies
  • Real estate
  • Professional services
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • High net worth individuals

You'll be responsible for:

  • Leading the tax practice
  • Managing client relationships
  • Reviewing complex work
  • Coaching and developing Managers and Seniors
  • Writing performance reviews
  • Helping shape the future direction of the office

This isn't simply about signing tax returns.

It's about leading people.

Building confidence.

Creating an environment where good professionals want to stay.

Why this opportunity stands out

Partner opportunities without a required book of business don't appear very often.

Neither do succession opportunities where you're stepping into an established office rather than trying to build one from scratch.

The foundations are already in place.

The client relationships are loyal.

The team is experienced.

The challenge isn't creating success.

It's continuing it.

For the right person, that's an incredibly attractive position to inherit.

The culture in practice

The office operates with a simple philosophy.

Be available.

Support each other.

Look after clients properly.

It's an environment where leadership remains visible and people genuinely enjoy working together.

The team spends most of the week together because collaboration is still viewed as one of the firm's biggest strengths.

Whilst there is flexibility when life requires it, this is very much a relationship driven office where conversations happen naturally, decisions are made quickly, and people enjoy being around each other.

That style won't suit everyone.

But for someone who believes leadership is easiest when you're genuinely present, it makes

complete sense.

Who tends to thrive here?

This role will suit someone who's already operating at Partner level, or someone who's genuinely ready to step into that position.

You'll probably enjoy it if you:

  • Have broad public accounting tax experience
  • Enjoy leading and developing people
  • Value long term client relationships
  • Prefer influence over internal politics
  • Want to inherit an established practice rather than build one from zero

Most importantly, you'll see leadership as being about people as much as technical expertise.

Because that's exactly what this opportunity needs.

What comes next?

This isn't simply replacing a retiring Partner.

It's becoming part of the firm's long term succession plan.

You'll inherit relationships built over decades, work alongside an experienced leadership team, and have the opportunity to shape how the office evolves over the next ten years.

Opportunities like that are exceptionally rare.

Especially when the client base, the team, and the platform are already in place.

I’m Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don’t just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they’ll thrive. It’s not about filling gaps. It’s about finding a fit that lasts.

Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don’t slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
