School Overview

Discovery Charter School is a STEAM middle and high school just north of Durham, NC seeking qualified teachers.

Discovery offers a unique and exciting Education Plan to help meet all students where they are and grow their individual talents and interests. Using an exciting, student-driven STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) curriculum, Discovery aims to grow student creativity, curiosity, and collaboration during the formative middle and high school years. Discovery features a high-tech learning environment including 1:1 student computers, 3D printers, and a virtual reality lab, as well as a highly personalized learning environment including standing desks and soft seating. Discovery will also offer a one-of-a-kind Passion Learning Time allowing students dedicated and structured time each day to grow their individual passions. Real-world experiences are essential to Discovery's mission, and as such field trips and guest speakers occur frequently.

Job Summary

The English teacher works to help students develop knowledge, think critically, analyze grade level text and provide tools students need to succeed throughout their school career and beyond. The teacher will be responsible for implementing North Carolina grade-level standards.The teacher will adapt and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum using academically rigorous lessons, unit plans, rubrics and assessments. They will use data to inform instruction and provide students with meaningful feedback on performance and plan for individual standards aligned curriculum.

The teacher will work closely and collaborate with their team, as well as other departments, to meet all student needs. In addition to core teaching responsibilities, teachers work with students in advisory groups, facilitate a Passion Learning Time period based on their own interest, and fulfill additional duties and responsibilities, such as monitoring lunch and assisting with dismissal.

The right person for this position will be highly flexible, dedicated, energetic, able to work well both individually and in groups, have strong communication skills (written and verbal), have a passion for children, and be able to think creatively out-of-the-box.

Additionally, Discovery builds in additional planning time and dedicated parent / teacher conference time each Friday, making use of a 12:15pm weekly Friday dismissal for students.

Qualifications

• A NC teaching license is highly preferred
• Must be a strong communicator, organized, a team player, and strong collaborator
• Must be tech-savvy or open to learning new technologies
• A minimum of 2 years of experience is preferred but not required
