The purpose of the Designer II position is to apply technical skills to design complex projects and provide expertise in safe, cost effective and reliable distribution power facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare project and job packages that include material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, sitedrawingsand construction drawings for various installations of electrical facilities in a cost-effective manner that maximizes safety and service reliability. 
  • Read and interpret blueprints, maps, change orders, improvement plans, construction specifications, procedure manuals, operational procedures, etc. 
  • Perform drafting work andassistin the preparation of designs,plansand reports. 
  • Makeaccurateengineering calculations. 
  • Collect and analyze field data and prepareaccurateand detailed reports and records. 
  • Learn, practice, and promote ALL safety policies and procedures 100% of the time. 
  • Apply various codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to all assigned work to create safe and cost-effective designs for projects ofmoderatecomplexity for both overhead and underground projects. 
  • Use various design software and work management tools. 
  • Evaluate distribution equipment such as transformers and fusing. 
  • Follow utility construction practices on publicright of way(ROW) and private land. 
  • Regularly communicate job status toassureclient expectations and deliverable dates are met. 
  • Coordinate with construction personnel and clients to resolve any project issues.  
  • Develop relationships with key internal and external customers while supporting both company and client’s business goals and expectations whilerepresentingthemselves both positively and professionally. 
  • Maintain files and records in an organized manner. 
  • Perform otherduties asassigned by management. 

Education, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, design technology, or a related field and at least 2 years of utility experience is preferred. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering will qualify for this position with no prior experience.High School diploma/GED with 4 years of equivalent utility experience without a degree.
  • Proficient in basic principles and practices of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general science and scales of weight and measurements as applied to engineer’s computations and construction (using currency and other forms of measurement). 
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office based applications. 
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community. 
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules,operatingand maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Utilizedcommon-senseunderstandingin order tocarry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.  
  • Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion with business information.  
  • Self-motivated, savvy, reliable, trustworthy,as well astechnically competent. 
  • Demonstrated team player. 
  • Demonstrated time management skills. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to constructively manage multiple tasks. 
  • Possess valid driver’s license and vehicle suitable for business use (mileage reimbursement may apply). 
  • Requiredtoparticipatein storm restorationactivitiesas a “Driver”,“Wire Guard” or “Assessor” if needed.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Physical Functions: Physical requirements involve performing general office activities. This role will be required to regularly, walk up to 2 miles per day. The role will also occasionally sit, stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, and will occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. 

Working Environment: This role will have both an indoor normal climate-controlled office setting as well as outside working conditions which may include extreme heat, extreme cold, noise, and sun exposure. 

Proper Personal Equipment: Hard hat, safety glasses, work gloves, ID card, cellular phone, EH rated footwear with toe box OSHA Ratings, PVD's, DRG Safety Traffic Vest.

Career Progression

Power Designer II is the second working level in the Engineering department. Incumbents will have 4 years of experience and perform routine tasks independently, receiving little to no supervision when assisting with basic design tasks and some supervision when performing more complex engineering tasks. The natural progression for this position is to a Designer III. Please note that years of service alone do not automatically qualify an individual for the next tier position. Advancement from Power Designer II to the next tier is determined by a combination of demonstrated knowledge, skill proficiency, and relevant industry experience and is solely based on supervision’s evaluation.
