Direct Counsel is partnering with a well-regarded California law firm to recruit a Legal Practice Assistant (LPA) to support its Trial and Litigation Group in the firm’s downtown Los Angeles office.

About the Role
This is a full-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Administration. The Legal Practice Assistant provides high-level administrative and litigation support to attorneys within the Trial and Litigation Group. The role requires advanced knowledge of litigation procedures, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. This position does not have direct reports.
The Litigation Group handles complex matters in both state and federal court, including constitutional law, wildfire litigation, COVID-19 litigation, civil rights and land use disputes, First Amendment claims, takings, and class actions, from initial pleadings through discovery, dispositive motions, trial, and appeal.
Key Responsibilities

Draft, revise, and format legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, and memoranda

Prepare and file documents in California state and federal courts (e-filing and in-person)

Generate Tables of Authorities and Tables of Contents using firm software

Manage attorney calendars and litigation deadlines (e.g., CompuLaw)

Coordinate case materials and ensure compliance with court rules

Utilize firm systems including MS Office, iManage, CCC Macros, Adobe, and time/billing software

Communicate professionally with attorneys, staff, clients, and external contacts

Maintain accuracy and efficiency in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment

Perform additional administrative and litigation support tasks as assigned
Qualifications

High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred

Minimum of 7 years of legal secretary or legal assistant experience

California state and federal litigation experience required

Appellate experience strongly preferred

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong organizational and multitasking abilities

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Proven ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
Compensation

Hourly Rate: $48.08 – $54.80 per hour, depending on experience
