Springfield, MO Full Time
POSTED ON 9/17/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/16/2026
Brief Description

For more than 50 years, our company has been designing and manufacturing security products that protect people, property, and businesses. Our long history is built on engineering expertise, quality craftsmanship, innovation, and a commitment to our customers.

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Designer to join our Engineering team and help turn product concepts into real-world products. You’ll have the opportunity to solve design challenges, make mechanical design decisions, work directly with manufacturing partners, and see your designs move from concept to prototype to production.

The Mechanical Designer develops mechanical designs and detailed drawings for electronic products and related components. You’ll work on a variety of projects involving metal enclosures, fabricated and machined components, wire harnesses, mechanical assemblies, mounting hardware, and other product hardware.

You’ll collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, and outside vendors to create designs that balance function, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, quality, and cost. From interpreting product requirements and developing concepts to creating detailed manufacturing drawings and supporting production, you’ll play an important role throughout the entire product development process.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze mechanical design requirements and develop practical design solutions that meet functional, dimensional, manufacturing, reliability, serviceability, and cost requirements.
  • Develop mechanical designs for electronic products, including metal enclosures, brackets, covers, panels, mounting hardware, fabricated parts, machined parts, and other mechanical components.
  • Make appropriate mechanical design decisions regarding materials, construction methods, fasteners, hardware, finishes, tolerances, and other design details.
  • Create detailed 2D manufacturing drawings and associated CAD documentation for mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Develop and evaluate dimensional tolerances and tolerance stack-ups to ensure proper fit, function, and manufacturability.
  • Create mechanical layouts and assembly drawings showing component relationships, mounting requirements, critical dimensions, and assembly methods.
  • Develop wire harness designs and prepare wire harness drawings and related documentation, including wire routing, connector information, wire specifications, and assembly requirements.
  • Work with Electrical Engineering and other Engineering personnel to establish and maintain mechanical interfaces between PCBs, electronic components, wiring, enclosures, and other product assemblies.
  • Review mechanical designs for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, reliability, and cost, and recommend alternate materials, constructions, or manufacturing methods when appropriate.
  • Work directly with outside vendors to develop prototypes, obtain design feedback, resolve manufacturing issues, and transition designs into production.
  • Build and evaluate mechanical prototypes and assist with prototype and first-article construction and inspection.
  • Support DMP Incoming Inspection and Quality personnel in resolving dimensional, fit, finish, and other mechanical issues identified during receiving or production.
  • Investigate mechanical production problems and develop or implement approved design changes to improve manufacturability, reliability, quality, or cost.
  • Maintain accurate and current CAD files, drawings, bills of material, revisions, and other mechanical product documentation in accordance with DMP engineering and document-control processes.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining mechanical design standards, CAD libraries, drawing practices, templates, and engineering processes.
  • Complete assigned mechanical designs on schedule and with a high level of quality, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ensure mechanical designs are consistent with applicable product requirements, manufacturing capabilities, cost allocations, and DMP quality expectations.
  • Comply with DMP Data Classification Standards and applicable company policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, improve efficiency, and reduce product or manufacturing costs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 years of experience designing mechanical components and assemblies, preferably for electronic products manufactured in volume.
  • Experience designing metal enclosures and fabricated or machined components.
  • Proficiency with mechanical CAD software, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop mechanical designs from product requirements and concepts through completed, manufacturable designs, including layouts, material and hardware selection, tolerances, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Working knowledge of common manufacturing processes for sheet metal, machined parts, fabricated components, fasteners, and other mechanical hardware.
  • Experience developing and evaluating tolerance stack-ups and applying appropriate dimensional tolerances.
  • Understanding of design-for-manufacturability, design-for-assembly, reliability, serviceability, and cost considerations.
  • Ability to interpret engineering requirements, electrical/mechanical interfaces, component datasheets, manufacturing requirements, and existing product documentation.
  • Ability to create and maintain detailed mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, and related manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience working directly with outside manufacturing vendors and resolving design or manufacturing issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and sound mechanical design judgment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting established schedules.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineers, manufacturing personnel, vendors, and other departments.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow established engineering and documentation processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Punctual, cooperative, and maintains a positive attitude.
  • Ability to accept and benefit from constructive criticism.
