Position Summary
The Plasma Operator is responsible for safely operating CNC plasma cutting equipment to produce high-quality metal components according to engineering drawings, production schedules, and quality standards. This role ensures materials are cut accurately, equipment is maintained, and production goals are met while supporting a safe and organized manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate CNC plasma cutting machines to cut steel and other materials according to work
orders and engineering specifications.
- Load, unload, and position raw materials using overhead cranes, forklifts, or other authorized material handling equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, cut files, nesting layouts, and work instructions.
- Verify material type, thickness, dimensions, and part identification before processing.
- Monitor machine performance and make operational adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
- Perform machine setup, consumable changes, and preventive maintenance.
- Inspect finished parts for dimensional accuracy and compliance with specifications.
- Report equipment malfunctions, quality concerns, and material defects.
- Record production, scrap, downtime, and completed work orders accurately.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area following 5S standards.
- Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and lockout/tagout practices.
- Collaborate with Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Manufacturing or industrial experience preferred.
- Experience operating CNC plasma equipment preferred but not required.
- Ability to read a tape measure and use precision measuring tools.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to read blueprints and production documents.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Messer, Hypertherm, Burny, or similar CNC plasma systems.
- Steel fabrication or trailer manufacturing experience.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification or experience.
- Basic understanding of G-code or CNC programming.
