Dexter, a premier designer and manufacturer of axles, suspension systems, brakes, doors, venting products, trailer parts, accessories, and towing components for the commercial trailer, RV, heavy-duty, marine, agriculture, and manufactured housing markets, is hiring a Manufacturing Process & Maintenance Engineering Lead in Albion, IN.
In this role, you’ll champion day-to-day production needs across our multi-plant manufacturing campus, lead our Maintenance department, drive large capital initiatives with cross-functional partners, and turn process improvements into shop-floor reality.
A day in the life
- Walk the floor with maintenance and operations to solve issues in real time—mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical.
- Update and improve process flow diagrams and facility layouts to enhance safety, throughput, and efficiency.
- Guide new product introductions by joining cross-functional design reviews, shaping standards, and approving prints for manufacturability and cost.
- Own the mechanical design of fixtures, tooling, components, and assemblies from scope to completion.
- Lead capital projects, coordinate stakeholders, and deliver results to the production floor.
How you’ll make an impact
Production Support
- Provide technical expertise, structured problem solving, and troubleshooting guidance to keep operations running safely and efficiently.
- Identify and implement improvements that elevate safety and productivity.
Project Leadership
- Participate in design reviews to establish standard and custom product designs for new launches.
- Develop and communicate manufacturing standards for launches, projects, and efficiency improvements across departments.
- Review and approve engineering prints and specifications for optimal manufacturability, cost, tooling, and process flow.
- Collaborate closely with the Product Design team to resolve design challenges and inform cost-effective solutions.
Mechanical Design Ownership
- Analyze existing designs to fully understand function and constraints.
- Drive the complete lifecycle of mechanical design work—from definition through implementation.
Process & Continuous Improvement
- Lead and participate in strategic initiatives (cycle time, safety, quality, and cost).
- Contribute to team-based continuous improvement projects and self-direct daily CI actions.
Quality Partnership
- Support the Quality team on audit follow-ups, field service needs, and resolution of manufacturing-related quality issues.
Skills that set you up for success
Computer Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- 2D/3D CAD expertise—preference for AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis and tools (Minitab; Cpk/Ppk).
Communication
- Strong collaboration, leadership, and interpersonal capabilities across all levels in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to craft clear presentations for teams and leadership.
- Create operator work instructions, quality alerts, and concise communications.
- Translate complex processes and data into clear recommendations for decision-making.
Problem Solving
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and communicate analytical decisions.
- Operate with urgency and consistently meet deadlines.
- Comfortable with hands-on troubleshooting alongside operators and maintenance technicians (mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical).
Background & experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field—or an equivalent blend of education and experience.
- 3 years in a manufacturing environment with a solid CNC background.
