Position Overview
The Senior Health Information Management (HIM) Coder is responsible for performing high-quality, accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding for inpatient encounters. This role ensures compliance with official coding guidelines, supports accurate billing, and contributes to reduced denials through precise documentation review and collaboration with clinical teams. The coder will maintain a minimum coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher and work closely with HIM leadership and Clinical Documentation Specialists.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient encounters in accordance with official coding guidelines
- Review clinical documentation, diagnostic results, and physician records to ensure complete and accurate coding
- Abstract and enter coded data into Clients Health electronic medical record (EMR) systems
- Generate appropriate MS/APR DRGs based on coded data
- Verify patient dispositions and physician documentation for accuracy and completeness
- Collaborate with HIM teams and Clinical Documentation Specialists to improve documentation quality and reduce billing denials
- Maintain coding accuracy standards of 95% or greater
- Assist with additional departmental tasks as assigned by leadership
- Adhere to clients competencies and compliance standards
Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Regional Coding Manager
- Receives additional leadership guidance from the Director of Coding Operations and System HIM Director
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma (required; must be submitted with application)
- Active inpatient coding certification (online certification verification required with submission)
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines
- Experience with inpatient coding and DRG assignment
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting productivity and quality standards
Job Types: Full-time, Contract
Pay: $30.00 - $43.00 per hour
