What are the responsibilities and job description for the Yard Manager position at Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery LLC?
The Yard Manager will report to the site’s General Manager and/or the Regional Yard Manager and is responsible for all activities associated with the nursery yard, including the related site administration, staffing, and various yard departments such as Receiving, Shipping, Delivery, Cross Dock, Will-Call, Stocking, Pulling, and Chemical Applicators, including the effective management of all nursery personnel in the yard.
Essential Duties:
- Understands all the various functions of the yard and ensures the proper procedures are carried out in all tasks.
- Possesses strong customer service skills, knowledge of who to contact to get the customer the help needed.
- Understands our software processes in relation to efficiently moving inventory around the yard.
- Ensure the various departments of the yard are properly staffed with trained employees and preforming tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Manages various project improvements within the yard (i.e., irrigation, various equipment purchases, routine maintenance, etc.)
- Understands the city, county, and state regulations regarding compliance in the yard.
- Utilize the Assistant Yard Managers, Supervisors, and Crew Leaders to obtain company objectives, ensure staff is properly trained and that tasks are carried out. Capable of delegating authority and responsibility for accountability and follow-up.
- Responsible for the hiring in the yard including interviews, reference checks if needed and communication to the Human Resource Representative to prepare onboarding packets.
- Conducts annual performance reviews and reports performance issues to the site’s Human Resource Representative. Counsel employees to improve poor performance and is involved is disciplinary action when needed.
- Maintains a safe workplace and ensures that staff is preforming duties safely. Ensures that required trainings and/or certifications are maintained by staff when required.
- Responsible for the facility’s security, including entry gate greeters and entry/exit monitoring personnel.
- Responsible for the effective training and development of a competent assistant manager or supervisor who is responsible during any absence of the manager.
- Communicates and works with the site Human Resource Representative (usually Office Manager) to resolve any employee complaints, conflicts between coworkers, etc.
- Adheres to all company policies, procedures and business ethics codes and ensures that they are communicated and implemented within the team. Promotes a team atmosphere in the workplace.
- Responsible to maintain the highest possible personnel and product standards, professionalism, and appearance.
- Possesses effective communication skills within the yard and in their necessary interactions with the office staff.
- Acts as the best representation for the yard.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Local plant variety knowledge and horticultural expertise
- Bilingual in Spanish, or ability to communicate with nursery staff.
- Professional workplace standards, staffing standards, and exceptional customer service skills.
Job Specifications:
- 7 to 10 years of experience in a nursery setting.
- Experience with (or ability to understand) inventory tracking/ ERP software solutions in relation to the yard functions
- Extensive experience in all aspects of customer service and customer satisfaction.
- Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions on uneven ground surfaces. Frequent twisting, turning, and bending at the waist will be required. At times lifting requirements may be up to 30 lbs. and team lifts can be up to 100 lbs.
